It's not that hard considering that out of nowhere the same people that made those niche games in the 90's came up with a full 3D and competently produced open world game that made the concept work in a simple but effective way, bonus points for having tons of normie appeal and a good soundtrack.

They pretty much nailed the formula for that kind of games just like Ocarina of time did it for the adventure genre in the 90's, except they did it early on the PS2 era which helped it a lot.
