I'm not a /pol/turd but I don't think sending free food to Africa will help at all. Money won't work either because that just gets diverted into someone's pocket. The only real way to fix Africa is to invest in the people by educating them, and more more importantly investing in Africa. It will happen eventually when all the Asian countries become too expensive so the bad parts of Africa becomes a viable manufacturing zone.

If you read what I say exactly after that you'd know I agree with you. One needs to try to bring education to them but like in China the only thing that will bring real change is industrialization. In fact you can do both at the same time but I friend of mine told me it sounded like slavery.

My idea was something along the lines of making manufacturing plants and the people who work there get education, food and a place to live in exchange for that and some credits that they can use to buy products the same company provides.

Properly cooked meat is well done. Hence "done". You've reached the ideal amount of cooking. It's done. You can stop now. Stopping before that point is not proper. It's not rare done. Or medium done. If there is a possibility that something has survived inside that meat then the meat was not cooked properly. It might have been cooked enough to satisfy you, but you are fine with ingesting shit that can fuck you up so your opinion on what cooking means is irrelevant.

It's called Well Done because it is Extremely Cooked. Practically burnt on the outside and just short of that on the inside. Dried out and lacking most of its flavor.

You are trying to distort the definition to suit your narrative. People like you who vehemently defend an irrational point of view by justifying it with weak beliefs not based on facts deserve all of the suffering they get. If you think well done meat doesn't take phenomenal you've been drinking the kool-aid for far too long. Don't blame proper well done meat for all of the shitty cooks you've encountered that, like you, believe that if people want their meat cooked we'll overcook it and dry it out just to spite them.

Are you sure that's not what you're doing? Any renowned chef will say a steak cooked well done is a piece of shit or even an insult to their culinary skills. What renowned shefs say > what you think.
Stopped reading there.
>>
>>378831492

If you go to a high quality restaurant and ask an actual chef to cook you a steak and the words "well done" come out of your mouth, he will more than likely refuse.

As well he should, since a well done steak is not suitable for consumption in a fine dining environment.

Then they aren't cooking it well done. Well done is literally overcooking a steak which results in it drying out.
Chefs take pride in not serving dry, overcooked flipflops that you perceive as "properly cooked" steak.
And when any chef worth their salt agrees on something, it tends to be right.

Not him, but a chef isn't an artist. They're performing a service for someone who requests it. If someone asks for a well done steak it's not their place to judge their taste. They have the ability to refuse to cook steaks that way, but refusing a customer because of your personal taste isn't providing a good service.
>>
>>378831620
This is not true, unless it's a super famous restaurant in New York (and even then I doubt it) the chef will cook the steak like you want it. He'll roll his eyes and talk shit and make fun of you with everyone in the kitchen but he'll do it.

Considering that retards like you make up like 5% of consumers I don't think that's an issue. And those that don't care to actually serve it just let it burn for a while and then serve it. You can't tell the difference one way or another how cooked it is when you order it well done.
>>
>>378832474
Drawing for commission and cooking for commission are both first and foremost a service, and refusing to serve someone solely because you don't like a customer's taste is poor service.
You can selfishly refuse the service all you want, but that makes you a bad commission artist and a bad food purveyor.

As a service provider, you are judged on your ability to provide your service as well as the quality of service you provide. Having standards just means you value one aspect of your profession over the other. And that's 100% fine. Especially when it comes to running personal commissions, it's important to enjoy what you're doing. But that means there will be less people whom you could have otherwise provided your service for.
And for anyone who does not run an independent service, your superiors, as well as the customer, won't care about your preferences.

Just like people that want their steak well done, people with fetishes disgusting enough to warrant exclusion from commissions is small. Small enough to not matter. In fact, a steakhouse I worked at some years ago had an unspoken rule that if someone ordered well done that they were served last. Not on purpose but simply because that's how long the steak would be cooked. If they asked for a different steak and sent it back, we cooked it more and sent it back out. Was it mean? Sure. Was it funny? Yes. Did we have every right to return the insult they gave us, especially if they asked for steak sauce too? Absolutely.

And if the customer didn't like what you served them, or took too long to serve them, you possibly lost them as a customer too. No skin off your nose. But that means you are not providing a good service.
What you think constitutes good food doesn't mean anything if the livelihood of your profession relies on satisfying others. Especially now that it's so easy to have your opinion of business' service heard. Do you know how much a single star more on Yelp helps revenue? More than a petty joke is worth, I'll tell you that much.

same idiot chef here but to be honest senpai, and this is a very universal sentiment, but I hate "princess mods". Eat the fucking food the way I made it, don't even ask for something to be excluded. I make at least 100 orders a day and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE FUCKING ITEMS IS GOING TO BE IDENTICAL TO THE LAST. Consistency is a huge part of the discipline and every time someone tries to ask for a stupid order, I have to waste a full minute of my time explaining to a servant, who is more than likely a moron, that it isn't going to happen and then run through a list of acceptable alternatives so I am not left looking like the bad guy. I would rather "ruin the business" by declining a few idiot requests than ruin my business by destroying my fucking product. Your fucking well done steak is going to look ridiculous to everyone else in the establishment, especially the regulars, and I would rather lose one potential customer than give regulars a reason to not come back.

A person complaining that they won't be served the food they ordered, however, would possibly make me reconsider my patronage.

As a chef who's worked in multiple restaurants that have served steak, anyone that gets well-done is literally an embarrassment.

People that say they'll refuse to serve you the well-done steak are idiots too. We've had some pretty fucking stupid orders come in and well-done orders are definitely the most common to laugh at, but we'll still try our best to give you what you want.

That said, literally every chef or back-of-house worker I know usually mocks anyone that orders a leather shoe. If it's an old person then sure, we'll laugh, but they're old and probably paranoid about getting sick and that's fine.

If you're under 40 and you get well-done steak, I literally do not understand why you'd even bother going out to anything that's not a fastfood joint. I mean just save yourself the money at that point. You can just get any piece of meat at the grocery shelf and throw it on the pan for an hour if you want some leather.

Thanks for relating your personal perspective, but as you could probably guess, I don't give a shit about outsider opinions. Restaurant service is expensive, and with slim margins on some items. I have to make this food like it costs upwards of 20 dollars a plate, and if I can't send something out that didn't make it look like I just made the best whatever of my life, it doesn't deserve to go to the table. You don't go in to any other business and dictate exactly how they are going to serve you. Many people have unrealistic expectations of what actually happens in a kitchen, there isn't any food or equipment back there that isn't directly relevant to something that is, was, or will be on the menu and I am not going to make something that will taste/look like shit with what I have, because again, some other customer is thinking about what they want to eat and if they see something that looks or smells like hot garbage, they're going to start getting bad ideas about what we serve there.

Moreover, if you don't work in this industry, and even if you do, the vast majority of businesses fail and turnover is frequent because it has low standards of entry but most people can't actually hack it anyways, keep your mouth shut because you don't know a damn thing about restaurants.

>You don't go in to any other business and dictate exactly how they are going to serve you
Yes, you actually do in most cases.

Want a haircut? You tell them exactly what you want and they'll keep asking you if it's looking good while they do it. Want to have a house built? You tell them what you want and how you want it done. Want to order a CRM system for your company? You have the program tailored to your specific needs in most cases unless, somehow, the program is already everything you want.

By saying you don't do what your customers want you to do is like saying you're equivalent to a low tier fucking self-service store like Walmart where people come in, pick what they want, and leave.
>>
>>378836769
>I don't give a shit about outsider opinions
You mean customer opinions. You mean the opinion of the person who's paying for the thing you're making. The outsider whose money you are accepting in exchange for your service. The person, without whom, you would not be able to continue doing what you do.
You talk like you're some amazing culinary artist and businessman, but you're just a service provider. And a lousy one judging by your ethic.

You don't tell a mechanic how to fix your car and you wouldn't tell a lawyer how to do their job. I don't tell my dentist what to do and I sure as fuck don't go to mcdonalds and tell them how to do their jobs. Even then, all of these examples are taking your input but only taking your input. You make the order and then they actually do the work behind it, because you don't know how or can't do it yourself. You're also forgetting that roughly 1 in 3 people are going to be a hassle for one reason or another, and you get a few people that are just plain abusive more than once a day. Some people get off on complaining about everything they are served, talking shit on yelp, and generally being a miserable piece of shit in general. People get drunk and vomit in the hallways, they cut lines of coke on top of toilet paper dispensers, they want you to make them sliders but out of the expensive gourmet sausages instead of the cheap pulled pork and pay less than menu price; and the farther you get up the ladder, the more shameless people are about it. People in North America think that because they leave an extra 20 for the help they can have a place to party hard, and fuck that. And fuck you if you believe in that "the customer is right" bullshit because you're enabling it.

>you wouldn't tell a lawyer how to do their job
I tell him what I want. He tells me if he can do it and how much it is. As long as it fits what I want, I accept. Otherwise I look elsewhere. Same applies to ordering food at a restaurant.

I won't go into a kitchen and request they use a certain oven, or complain that they used a certain sex of cow for the beef. But if I look at a menu, see something I want, ask for it, and am told it can be done, I will expect it the way I ordered. There are inconsiderate people in the world that will take advantage of people in the service industry, and that sucks. But I don't think ordering a well-done steak is being inconsiderate.

Considering how long it takes to cook a steak to well done without fucking everything else we have to do, yeah, it is a shit move. Do you have any idea of how many people are served in the average restaurant on a daily basis? If I serve 200 people a day, and everyone just orders off the menu normally and 5 are some randoms who want to essentially make their own menu, guess who's business I am going to cater to.
>>
>>378840198
Different person and I haven't bothered reading most of the posts.

It's important to realize what it is that you actually want. For example, when you're ordering food at a restaurant, what you're looking for is not the actual food itself, but the pleasure that comes from eating it. If the chef then knows for certain that you would experience greater pleasure by your steak being done in a way that you didn't ask for it, should the chef 1) cater to your demands despite knowing that you'd like it less that way or 2) ignore your demands so you would experience greater pleasure? Obviously, this scenario relies on the assumption that the chef knows for certain, which doesn't exactly apply in most cases.

This is also very relevant from a game development perspective. Often you have customers that don't actually understand what they want. WoW, for example, was guilty of listening to player desires and then ruining the game. Players said "why can't my class do x when the other class can do it?", and then eventually class homogenization went way too far. Sometimes not listening to your customers is the right thing, because they can be too stupid to know what actually want.
>>
>>378840953
The latter is hardly an applicable example considering that it's about an online game and its world that's shared by millions of people. What some retard considers fun is most likely consider unfun by thousands of others.

I'm talking about issues that the majority of the playerbase would agree with. If they weren't, there would've been a lot of controversy when they were implemented. I'm just a firm believer that most people who play video games don't know what they want.

Self imposed challenge is one thing. Give an average person a game that includes something that makes the game too easy. Let's say a single optional skill is completely overpowered. Without using it, the game is fun and relatively challenging, but with it, it becomes nothing but pressing one button. Will most people pick the fun route? Nope. They will go through the game abusing the overpowered skill, and then proceed to call the game too easy. This results from people's natural tendency to avoid effort, even if they realize that doing so would reduce the amount of fun they have.

If I were to read "we do not serve well-done steak" or if I were told such, I wouldn't order it. I'd either order something else or leave. I have never seen that written in any menu, nor have I been turned down an order when ordering a well-done steak. I'm not asking for a blowjob under the table while I eat my burned boot, just serve me what's on your menu.

>>378840953
>If the chef then knows for certain that you would experience greater pleasure by your steak being done in a way that you didn't ask for
I'm not ordering my steak well-done on a whim. It's what I like and it's what I'm asking for. If it's some specialty dish I don't know and ask for a recommendation, that's one thing, but to tell someone "oh no, THAT'S not how you like it" is pretty imprudent. Especially from someone who is supposed to be providing the service I ask for.
Also, there's a reason people shit on everyone trying to use food analogies on /v/.The differences between providing an ordered service and a pre-made product are two wholly different things.
>>
>>378841790
>It's what I like and it's what I'm asking for
It's a case of "you think you do but you don't". In the case of well done steaks, do you think people in general ask for them because they actually like them more, or because they merely think they like them more?

Either way, the scenario was hypothetical, where the chef knows for certain what you actually like more. Whether you like well done steaks or not isn't the relevant thing here, but whether it is the duty of the chef to provide what you ask for or what you actually want.
>>
>>378842231
In your impossible hypothetical, it's the chef's duty to provide what I asked for. They aren't out to shape my life for the better. They aren't being paid to give their sage wisdom to someone who doesn't know better. They're a service provider whose job it is to provide the services asked of them. If this omniscient chef gave me a sample on the side for free, that'd be optimum though.

The hypothetical scenario isn't supposed to be completely realistic, but in cases like this, it's important to consider the scenario with as few variables as possible before you start considering a more realistic, difficult scenario where even small variables can cause the answer to be different.

Anyway, I disagree with you here. The chef should be providing the customer what he really wants if he knows that the customer is mistaken. Let's use another example where it's easier to see the objective mistake. Say you have a guy that comes to you saying that he wants the best power generator, and because the best power generators runs on hamsters, he wants one of those. You know what he wants (the best power generator) but it is incompatible with what he's asking for, because he's mistaken about the best ones running on hamsters. Should you correct his mistake, or just give him what he asks for?

There's really no correct answer here, since you can argue a case for both. Just ends up being a matter of opinion.

No, don't change the hypothetical if it means you won't see the point.
If a guy comes in and says "I want the best steak", and the magical chef knows that he would like it a certain way best, then he should provide it that way for the customer.
But if the guy walks in and says "I want a well-done steak", and the magical chef knows that he would like it cooked another way better, he should give him what he ordered. He can offer his opinion at the risk of sounding pushy, but if the customer is adamant when he says he wants it done a certain way, and the chef is offering it, then that's how it should be done.
