It's a valid statement all the same. There've been a fuckton of QoL improvements and mechanical refinements over the years that make older games harder to go back to. Ape Escape was a pretty big deal when it came out in '99 (what with its huge emphasis on analog controls), but goddamn if it doesn't feel clunky now. Same goes for shit like GoldenEye 007.

Most games from 2 or more generations ago had atrocious controls that were ok for the time but after you play games from this generation it's really hard to go back and not notice how much worse the controls are if you compare them to today's standards

You really nailed it.

The graphics, music, lack of voice acting. None of that really gets to me and I can easily overlook as the game simply being a product of the time. But the controls are terrible and make playing an absolute chore.

Especially on games with set camera angles like Silent Hill, i went back and tried to play 3 and it felt like everything I was doing was backwards and filtered through a layer of mud.

one of the games i liked playing, has only one control scheme and you cant change it. its a fps style game but you use the mouse to strafe left and right, a and d key for turn left and right, and the shoot button is left control, and left click is zoom

very rarely are the controls actually bad, just not what you're used to. For example, Core design got a lot of flack for sticking with tank controls for Tomb Raider for so long, but when Crystal Dynamics took over the series and put in a camera relative analogue control scheme they had to make a lot of concessions and add a lot automation to make the game playable, resulting in a completely different kind of game. You simply cannot make a game like the classic Tomb Raiders using a different control scheme.
