I went through MHX by playing Hammer + adept.
It just felt so much better to use than in MH4U.

Like holy shit, why. In terms of how it affects your playstyle, it is so much worse. Instead of having to get your aura back after a period of two blissful minutes of freedom, you have to maintain your aura at literally every possible opportunity. It is only the absolute best players that can get away with not topping it up every 30 seconds.

Like, so fucking what, you had to get your aura back after two minutes of the strongest power buff LS has ever had in the history of Monster Hunter. It's not like they didn't make it monumentally easier to achieve with the addition of being able to fade slash into a distance-closing spirit combo that jumped straight into the third of four fucking consecutive attacks or anything. It's not like they didn't increase your attack opportunities massively by making its moveset a lot more fluid and flexible and thus making up for any perceived "damage loss" from having to get your aura back up, or anything.

3U's Aura made sense when it was 3U. It does not make sense post-4U, because they took a mechanic that--at its conception--made sense because it was a challenge to get your aura levels and keep it topped up, and then they applied it to a moveset that was designed to make it far easier to get your aura up to make up for altering the aura mechanic with the intent of achieving a better flow of combat.

End result? Keeping aura up is piss easy, but monotonous as fuck, more of a dull chore than an exciting mid-battle challenge. And this comes with arts and styles that make it even easier still to raise your aura. Why the fuck didn't they just keep the 4U aura if they were going to do that? It's so fucking stupid.

No. Most other weapons that are not lance have some manner of super armour, or if not are going to be focusing on areas that the longsword should not. Tail or back being a priority for the LS. Head or belly being a priority for lances or hammers, depending on the monster.

Besides, again, there are ways around tripping everyone around you. Using the double downslash, then fadeslashing away from teammates, and by that time the monster has likely recovered and there's a prime opportunity to close-in back into the spirit combo.

If you were hunting a Great Jaggi, it might be an issue, but on most large monsters, unless they're chicken walkers like Rathalos, it's a non-issue if everyone's competent.

Really that is the most important thing. The difference between solo play and team play for other weapons is minimal, but for longsword it's a whole other ballgame and a lot of people end up not really figuring that out, especially when with other weapons they can just mosh and casualties will be minimal. One could still say it's the weapon's fault for relying on a moveset which causes that cognitive divide in the first place, but I don't think that's quite true.

Only before you get elements and figure out its quirks. Being a faster weapon, the raw physical attack power of each attack is going to be low, but elements don't work on a "the move itself determines the damage done" basis like raw physical damage does. Elements are stronger the faster you are.

It's also the only weapon type that can use items without having to sheath first, and has one of the fastest unsheathed movespeeds to boot, letting it stay out of danger but in the monster's face quite a bit easier than other weapons are capable of. Given that it doesn't really have multi-hit attacks like the Dual Blades and its attack animations are short, it also has the most opportunities to dodge out of any weapon type in the game as it doesn't get locked into its own bullshit very easily.
