I love the game but my main complaints are: Yes, trance, half the cast being completely irrelevant (which bothers me in particular because I enjoy more character driven JRPGs like Tales and Persona), and yeah it could be a little faster to play. I also don't really like how much they split up the party during the story. Still a very enjoyable game, I would just enjoy it more if some of those elements were better.

It's not a bad game and definitely one of the better Final Fantasy titles but it's not the best and it's not 10/10. FF9 is a lot weaker after disk one, the story is kind of all over the place and the characters introduced later are much weaker than the ones introduced at the beginning.

Pretty sure the reason FF9 is remembered so fondly is because the beginning is god tier, unfortunately the mid to end game is just meh and for me that averages the game out a bit.

I won't take the piss out of FF9 for lack of difficulty and customization since pretty much every Final Fantasy game is piss easy and has minimal customization outside of equipment and magic, to a greater or lesser extent.

Anyway I was not talking about thing of note, I was talking about time. I definitely count Dollet as the beginning. In FF9 you got that tutorial fight, the sword fight against blank, the section with Vivi, the section with Steiner, talking to all Pluto soldiers, fighting Steiner 2 or 3 times, all the theater stuff etc... In FF8 you just go out of the class room, 3 screens outside and inside the cave.

In the evil forest you have the full party and can grind. After Dollet you have full party and can grind. When you're done with the evil forest you are probably already in Timber in FF8.

Everyones gives Beatrix a hard time but we're never really shown her cutting a bloody path through an army of Burmecian civilians, all we're consistently shown is that she protects the person of the Alexandrian sovereign. Queen Brahne burned down Burmercia with an army of Black Mages, Beatrix was there as protection for her while she was busy doing so. Meanwhile, in Cleyra, Beatrix's involvement boils down to stealing the crown jewel and commanding the troops trying to break into the city from below; the actual slaughter is handled once again by the Black Mages [which Beatrix directly opposes], and the city is destroyed directly by Brahne, using GARNET'S eidolons.

The way people talk about it you'd think Beatrix murdered every last rat herself, when the worst you can accuse her of is passively allowing Brahne to do it rather than resigning from command.

I remember vividly that as a 9 year old I read a PlayStation magazine with all sorts of games and the only game of all that 100% appealed to me and made me drool was this game. As for the troops under Beatrix command, you're not talking about a single integrated chain of command her. Remember that the Alexandrian Army had three [maybe more] wings:

As a FF9 fanboy, those things are mostly right. Trance is a disappointingly bad mechanic, FF9 is probably the easiest FF there is, and there's not huge amounts of customization (but you can still do a bunch with abilities)

Ozma's Curse is the most unfair shit I've seen in vidya.

I wish Square would re-release this and 8 on PS4 like they did with 7. I need those trophies when I play old Sony games now :/
