That's not necessarily true, since horror movies going back to even the 1920's were effects driven or at least relied on them heavily (the Edison Frankenstein, Vampyr, Invisible Man and Wolfman) but they still managed to balance it with creepy/gothic atmosphere. When they start explaining how the monster came to be with details that make it less... horrifying. Take the Xenomorph for example. We knew as much as we needed to. Egg contains facehugger, facehugger latches onto host, alien comes out and grows, boom. That's all you needed. Then Aliens, Prometheus and Alien Covenant comes out explaining more of the biology and inner workings of a xeno and ruined a good chunk.

You're right. There's a great movie in Sinister, it just loses points for some absolutely retarded decisions.
The found footage segments are all fantastic.
The jump scares are lazy, the ghost kids are retarded. If there had just been one quick scene with the ghost kids, it could've been good and mysterious, but that long scene of them jumping around the house was unacceptable.

The ending was poorly executed, but the idea of it wasn't bad.

Hellraiser was always my favorite "slasher" series. I guess it was because it felt darker like there was more depth to it. When they take you you don't die you suffer endlessly until you become a sadist and the designs for them were pretty good.

That made it much scarier. Death is death but in the hellraiser universe its just raw suffering. Same reason i liked his game Jerichos lore/atmosphere. When you die you become one with the flies you lose individuality and get tormented/fucked up and go insane belonging to the first born forever.

I look forward to Agony as well. Just endless pain.

In this vein, I don't see how anyone that appreciates cheesy 80s horror didn't dig the 13 Ghosts "remake". That movie was great. Pure schlock. I have never seen another movie treat ghosts like more traditional monsters that will chase you down and rip your guts out. It almost feels more like a Hellraiser than a haunted house film.

I'll probably get called a pleb but I like it. It never got the credit it deserved for being so unique.

You should check out The Wailing. It was my movie of the year for 2016. It's comparable to The Witch in that it strictly sticks to existing mythology instead of its own made up movie mythology. With that said, it's about Korean mythology that isn't well known in the west, so it might not make sense at first. I admittedly had to read up on the legends after the fact to make sense of it. It's a fucking great ride, though. I enjoyed it a lot while I watched it and appreciated it even more on a rewatch when I fully understood everything.

Jurassic Park is any ingenious mix of practical effects and cgi.
