>"Mom can you buy me a new video game?" >"Only if it's rated E you know the rules"

Is this rating necessary or should vidya be for everyone?
>>
>>378680064
It's useful for the typical lazy parent that doesn't bother to look into what the fuck their kids are getting exposed to.

Rating means mostly nothing in the US if it's not AO. A five year old could buy an M-rated game as long as there isn't a store policy, like Gamestop has, against it.
>>
>>378680559
In California, you can't buy an M game anywhere if you're under 17. More informed than seeing a rated R movie, at least when i was younger

>>
>>378680064
I am fine with them, the more info the better most of the time.
>>
>>378680559
Lies they card you at retail stores for m games. Yeah Internet shopping is a thing but they have carded me for years. I get carded more for video games then I do for cigarettes.
>>
>>378680064
>asking mom to buy games for him
>gated by the E rating
you need to be at least 18 years old to post here
>>
My mom never gave a shit, she bought me vice city even after the guy at the counter told her how bad it was
>>
>>378680064
PEGI > ESRB

Ratings are fine, it's an easy indicator to see how mature a game is before getting it. The only issue is stores that refuse to sell games to parents when the parents are fine with their kids playing it, but that's an issue with the store and not the ratings.
>>
>>378680064
Parents need to give more of a shit about what their children do, and the rating system makes it easier for parents who don't know anything about vidya to make informed decisions.

That said, it would be better to judge things on a case by case basis, but that's unrealistic for parents unfamiliar with games.
>>
>>378681348
I remember getting carded for video games, holy fuck. thank christ I've never bought anything at a retail store in like 6 years

The info should be there but I don't think there should be any restriction on what ages can actually buy them.
>>
>>378681881
OP indirectly admitted to going to reddit by reposting the picture

also, i don't know about you, but i get a bit tired from infinite ylyl threads full of fucking unfunny bananas all posted by the same guy, endless dick posting and rating threads, wwyds and face threads, loli and waifu claiming threads, bait threads, etc.

don't get me wrong, you can find amazing shit here. but it's kind of like a shit river, and i don't feel like swimming through a river of shit to find something decent.

and don't get me wrong #2, leddit is cringy as fuck and pretty cancerous most of the time, but it's the subreddit system that makes it somewhat decent and lets you find subreddits about almost anything, from memes to r/watchpeopledie
>>
>>378680064
Generally speaking, it's pretty good as a guideline, but parents should know their kids and see if the games they want to play are specifically appropriate for them. I remembering reading somewhere about a family that let their 10 year old play Halo because all the violence is basically on par with what you'd see in Star Wars, but games like GTA or Resident Evil weren't allowed
>>
>>378680559
When I was underage I would buy all my M-rated games at Walmart cause they were too apathetic to even notice.

EB Games would ALWAYS card though. I was 16 and had to get my dad to pick up my collectors copy of Fallout 3.

Moot is a lying piece of shit.
There is clearly a fuckload of crossover with redditards.

I wish MootTwo aka Hiroshima would do something about these faggots, and IP ban them. Redditors actively make this site worse with their normalfaggotry. Next thing you know you'll see faggots spouting Covfefe meems.

My mom would very rarely buy me video games, but when she did, she always bought me the most hardcore shit, I remember one day she brought home Manhunt and I loved it

yeah, pretty sure i just blocked it with my hand when i was showing my mom the rating, she only looked at the rating anyways.

I think it used to help parents know what their kids were watching or playing. I always informed parents of game ratings and sometimes got death stares from kids when they had to put a game back. The few times I got shrieked at by soccer moms about GTA's content made me make sure to ask.

At this point parents give their kids smartphones and tablets with no supervision. They can look up whatever fucked up media they want. I dont know how important the rating system is anymore.

Anyone under 35-40 does. Most parents today were kids when video games were a thing.
>>
>>378681881
Its funny to me that 4chan and reddit are the same thing other than accounts. Both are full of cucks who think they are amazing and both are full of people who are so stupid its laughable. I bet I triggered someone with this post and I am expecting a reply but no matter what you say you know I am right infact I know I am right that I will not read ANY reponces to this post so don't even try. You should actually be honored that someone like ME would even come and post here. Heh, maybe one day you'll understand
>>
>>378684782

So many people got their panties in a bunch due to Mortal Kombat. It was funny.
>>
>>378684562
your parents would either have to be illiterate or simply not care about you to not notice the giant glaring ratings on like every boxed video game ever.
>>
>>378685123
Yep, despite how blatantly over-the-top and absurd it was people lost their shit.

The first time I saw a fatality it blew my mind. It didn't seem like something you should even be able to do in a video game, but it was fucking rad.

You're thinking of the violent video games ban Schwarzenegger signed that was unconstitutional.
>>
I remember cycling all the way to the gameshop and they wouldn't sell me battlefront 2 because I was 11 and the rating was 12. Pissed me off
>>
>>378685690
Yeah, the Brown case. Looking back at the post I replied to, it was just a blanket statement about California, didn't actually say anything about it being illegal.

The video game classification board is trying hard to prevent kids from becoming weaboos.
>>
my family are computer illiterate, no one ever gave shit or even understood what those ratings are, but If or when I have kids I will definitely supervise them, gaming these days is full of cancer like bioware and ubisoft. I will only let them play doa.

>WHAT? THIS GAME HAS DRUGS, VIOLENCE, AND SEXUAL ACTS!? I'M NOT GETTING YOU THIS GAME!
>Meanwhile that's literally all American television features
Why are Burgers so paranoid about what they expose their kids to, then go right around and watch that shit in front of them anyway?
>>
>>378687221

Because we are bass ackwards as a country.
>>
>>378687221
Because TV is owned and produced by Americans, it only instills true American values in our children and is good for their development. Video games are imported by Tojo and are made to turn our kids into deviants.
>>
>>378687221
Because big companies got the cash for allowing this stuff.
>>
>>378687221
There's a reason those shows come on late at night, anon
>>
>>378684335
>>378680064
It's still useful for companies to wash their hands if a parent tries to throw a fit because they saw their child playing violent/suggestive videogames and they didn't notice when first buying it.

And that has been mostly its purpose since they were created.
>>
>>378685326
18+
>>
>>378687221
The best argument I can think of is that on a show you aren't actually doing the stuff yourself, you're just seeing it.
>>
>>378680064
I was allowed teen games as a little kid and began getting M games when I was ~12. It all comes down to the kid and the parents. My parents trusted me to know right from wrong and reality from fiction.
>>
>>378685086
Incorrect
>>
>>378680064
It's necessary as young people can't quite grasp the "doing as if" part in vidya, so younguns can actually see violent vidya MCs as role models and imitate them.
>>
>>378685592
>>"wow you became so much more productive when we take the Xbox away. Maybe we should sell it?"

Holy shit what fucking cunts your parents must have been.
