As much as I dislike the direction elder scrolls has gone in it still beats out Witcher 3. All Witcher 3 has going for it is story, everything else is incredibly sub par. On the otherhand while skyrim is incredibly watered down there are way more gameplay mechanics and ways to interact with the world than in the witcher. It's a consistent world full of neat little details and secrets, quests often merge into one single plot with different points of view and it is compact and functional. Once you get to the second half of chapter 2 it becomes a great experience. TW2 expanded a little bit on this concept.

The Witcher 3, on the other hand, is all over the place, and this becomes evident when you start visiting uninteresting villages which are blatant copy-paste of one another and there's not much to do except traveling and killing re-skined monsters using the same strategy over and over again. Say what you want about TW1's combat, but at least it punishes you for not being prepared and crafting good potions.

That's a disappointment but considering Skyrim has hundreds of unique NPCs with their own schedules, and the game released in 2011, it's okay.
They could've made all the cities five times larger and dump a bunch of NPCs you can barely interact with like in W3, but would that really be better, even for immersion?

It does in an RPG. You can build your character in different ways that change the gameplay and some classes fare easier in certain situations than others. If Skyrim was done well, class quests could be limited to their class. Witcher 3 doesn't even come close to any of that. A good Witcher RPG could have you pick your school.

So does Witcher 3. Hell, you could argue Witcher 3 has 3 different classes of Witcher you can specialise as - Swordsmanship, Signs, and Alchemy. How many classes are there in Skyrim? Oh yeah, none. At least Witcher 3 has the excuse that Geralt is a fucking Witcher and deviating from this would be incredibly lore & immersion breaking. In Skyrim there's nothing stopping a full-time mage from picking up a sword and chopping down a full-fledged warrior with it.

In my days (back in 2004) the Gothic series was considered to be Morrowind (and then Oblivion's) main competitor. And while 1 and 2 parts were great, gritty, realistic, and had great sidequests, the third game went to shit. Don't play it.

Also, I'd say Morrowind (maybe install some visual mods) is a great choice too.
