Seriously, get the meet-up app. I was socially awkward but had friends, then moved to Orlando, Florida. I didn't know anyone and all my co-workers are old. Used to app to meet some groups going to attractions around town and they were pretty cool and welcoming.

I think the issue you'll find here is that it literally takes an extrovert to seek out groups and actively take part in the group, and few people on /v/ are extroverts (just look how many people post INTJ or something similar in myers briggs threads). The average /v/irgin is the guy walking slightly behind his group of friends while they all carry on a conversation he can't find a way to take part in. Being with a group of strangers rather than friends will only amplify that behavior.
