When you're not paying it removes a lot of mental gymnastics you'd usually go through to get yourself to finish a game. When you get down to it most games are just a gussied up Pong. They're a little shinier, the gameplays a little more varied. In the end it all ends up the same, you go through the motions to justify spending your $60 on it.

I used to believe that but it isn't true.
I've dropped a shitton of games over the past few months that I've paid for.

Yet I've been absolutely addicted to Amayui, which I pirated. It kills me. I'm gonna pay for it once the digital version is released.
>>
happens to me on a regular basis. especially with "AAA" style big name games, when I haven't had to pay for them I can't justify wasting my time playing such low quality generic boring tripe. sure, I still quit games I've paid for but I'm a lot more willing to force myself through bad games when I've actually invested money in them
>>
>>378670630
If I payed for the game, I'm going to finish it. Doesn't mean I'm going to enjoy the experience. Waste of dosh.
>>
I pirated Prison Simulator but dumped thirty hours into it.

I pirated World of Warcraft and put hundreds of hours into it.

I pirated Watch Dogs 2 and put about 10 hours into it.

Not really. I have multiple games on Steam that I bought full price and have yet to even play.
Also multiple pirated games that I have finished.

It all depends of how good the game is.
Sometimes even games I pirate and finish I still buy them because of how good they are.

For some reason the fight in the full release was a bit harder than the demo, but it wasn't too bad at all. You just gotta not use Avalo. If Fia has the magic resistance shield on, all of the enemies do 1 hit damage to her.

Scene after that had me laughing my ass off though. Fia's VA is GOAT.

Have you tried getting a different hobby? Not like I'm expecting much from an SnKfag, but christ
>>
>>378670630
Nah, it's because you have no attachment to something because you got it without losing time or money or without putting any effort into it. When playing something like that, it becomes a competition between doing that and that which you would've been doing otherwise, and you're much more addicted to 4chan than video games. That last bit should be emphasized. I know you'd rather browse /v/ or whatever than play anything and it's not the game's fault.

If you go out and buy a game (especially a physical copy) an intrinsic attachment, albeit small, is created, which helps you push through any dull moments in the beginning. You call these "mental gymnastics", but your perception is warped.

I don't give a fuck if the developer gets to feed his kids or not. I'll avoid paying for a game when at all possible because:

1. My life won't be negatively impacted if I don't get a sequel to a game I like

2. There's always better uses for your money than some moral obligation of equal exchange, there's plenty of retards out there throwing their money away to keep the industry going

The more options you have, the worse it gets.

So the more you pirate, the more games you will drop at the very nanosecond the game slows down and becomes "boring" for WHATEVER reason.

And it becomes a cycle.

>download rompack for snes
>start ff6
>cant make it out of the first town because of all the dialogue you see
>switch games since you have thousands
>start a megaman game
>die one time for whatever reason
>switch games since you have thousands
>start a racing game
>dont get first place immediately
>switch games since you have thousands
>start a mario game
>die once for whatever reason or just get bored of running and jumping in 5 minutes
>switch games since you have thousands
>etc

Before you start with your garbage adhd accusations bullshit, this isn't because a person is lazy or has a short attention span. I'm very fucking patient and I've played the most boring shit for hundreds of hours at a time. I don't need constant action and constant gratification to play a video game.

There is something about having a shitton of games fall into your lap in one go that makes it nearly impossible to play any of them much less complete any of them and ESPECIALLY if it's a game you've already beaten before.

Like find any stream on twitch that is showcasing someone who just got an everdrive or one of those carts that has every single game for the system.

If they just got the thing and arent a speedrunner of some kind, they are never going to settle on a game for more than maybe 30 minutes tops. They will switch games nonstop until they stop using the everdrive thing completely.

Yeah, just came out a few days ago.
>>
>>378672836
Yes, retard.
Because every studio makes all their games with the exact UI and even the exact same maps, right?
>>
>>378671534
Well you get the gist of my meaning.

Most games just reuse the same basic gameplay premise over and over and use story, level design, music etc. to vary up the experience. Take Wind Waker, if it was just a game about using links sword fighting skills on a single respawning bokoblin it'd get old fast. But the final game isn't like that, it's got different areas and music and enemies and a thousand other things to make your think what you're doing is fresh and new.

But the core gameplay is the same thing you've been doing since second 1. When you pay for a game you're more inclined to get caught up in the games illusion, when you don't you're not. Depending on how good the developer is you'll be having too much fun to care or you'll stop 2 hours in and say to yourself "Hang on, I've done this already. It's not interesting or fun anymore, I'm going to stop playing now".
>>
>>378672752
Thats not just "similar".
Thats literally a reskin.
Play Kamidori and you will the it looks exactly the same but with different characters.

I love Kamidori but I didnt know the team behind it was that fucking lazy.

It's fantastic so far.
>>
>>378670630
Can't finish a game without your Steam achievements, buddy?
>>
>>378672902
This is exactly how it is.

Even when it's a game I like, I'll play for 8 hours or something and be satisfied. Put it down and never touch it again because I'm bored of the gameplay routine. It's not a bad game, I just don't want to play it more than I have already. Not when I have a dozen other games I haven't touched yet.
>>
Downloaded all my games, didn't buy a single game.

Started buying games, and bought games I had previously pirated, even though i never touched them after buying them.
Pirated Alien Isolation, finished it, bought it, saw it had DLCs, been playing the DLCs over and over.
Bought a "spare" Alien Isolation on humblebundle with all DLCs in case someone wanted it.
Give it away in an instant just like that to a friend which I hope enjoys it as much as I did.

Piracy is bad, but they never release demos nowadays and sometimes you'll end up having to pirate it but in the end just ends up playing the whole game on that pirated version.

I used to play DOOM shareware and thought that was the full game until I learned how to read English.
Such a good demo.
Then came the demo for Crysis and I spent so many hours on that until the game was released here, bought it instantly.

Now it's just early access that never comes to completion or pre-order trash.

Last game I saw that had a good portion to promote it's game was Project C.A.R.S. Pagani Edition which is a free version for VR users.

Not who you replied to but this is a very simplistic view. Most stories break down into "the heroes journey" or other similar basic constructs. This doesn't make modern stories unenjoyable, because we find new ways to apply their lessons and exciting ways to revitalize the source materials.

It's trivial to over-simplify something and make it all sound like garbage. It's a more complex process to see what a given piece of content is trying to do. This doesn't mean that there is bad content, there is plenty. But reducing all content in a medium to being "the same" has no intellectual rigor.

Are all movies just a collection of songs and camera angles? Are all books just a collection of words? No, of course not.
>>

>>378679353
Difference being a movie is over in 2 hours and a book in 10ish depending on the length and your reading speed.

Games go on for dozens of hours, and they use a lot more repetition to pad out their runtime. The few games I can stand to play anymore are Platinums games. They're usually over in 6 hours, the games pacing is fast and even though you end up doing the same things multiple times it's all over before the boredom sets in. Fact is to me most games don't have enough variety and content to justify their 20, 30, 40, 50 hour runtimes.

If you're reading books in 10 hours you're either listening to audiobooks or picking the wrong books. Probably both.

Length doesn't apply to the initial argument. If all games are basically pong, all stories basically boil down to basic oral stories passed down. That books are longer now is actually a point against them.

I would have bought it if it initially was on Steam, but I pirated Superhot VR because it came only to the retarded Oculus Rift store and I had the HTC Vive which is only for Steam and openvr. You can play Oculus games with a user-created mod, but fuck paying Oculus then

Now meanwhile it's out for Steam, but I already played it, I'll probably never buy it, unless it gets really cheap in a sale.
