>>378668518
>in the first few months after it launched
It remained that way until TBC launched.
>>378668575
I remember it being lively in TBC too, don't know about WotLK since i missed it, probably died in Cata.
>>378668294
It's Final Fantasy XIV dummy. You can drag emotes onto hotkey bars too, that's what all the shit on the left is. And the wifi icon is merely where you check server latency.
Also, people who play Lalafell (the midget race) are 100x worse than people who played Gnomes in WoW, and that's saying a lot.
I have never played an MMO
>Fishing Tourney every Sunday in STV
>Person who catches a certain amount of fish and turns them in first wins
>Have guild help me out by ganking other faction members competing
>News of the slaughter gets around
>Eventually other guilds start showing up to help their competing guild members
>Sundays eventually turn into a whole server ritual pvp bloodfest
I always have a softspot for STV

Was alot of twinks on my server, only 2 had the stv trinket. Was always a huge war with 40-100 people there
its a fun zone but i got kinda sick of it after leveling through it so many times. not a fault of STV so much as my own
i think ashenvale rivals it in terms of comfiness + ass-clenchability, for horde in particular. barrens is forever my favorite comfy zone, that loose chain of barrens -> thousand needles -> tanaris (with a few other zones in between to be properly leveled) is maybe the most comfy in the game
>>378669420
People are using the word for things that aren't really comfortable. STV is a dense jungle zone which is infamous for level capped players ganking lowbies. There is literally nothing comfortable about the zone. People are using the word in place of "nostalgic" and it's wrong.

I just hope we can forge new memories like that in a future MMO, but something tells me MMOs are dead until VR becomes more mainstream and adds a new element to them. Multinational companies have backups of backups of backups stored in fucking tape drives. It's literally impossible for them to have lost the source, first and foremost because legal audits are a thing. Let's say a company accuses you of code theft, you need to prove that you didn't steal their code and you do that by providing the source.
>>378677517
remember wow was made a very long time ago now, back before a lot of good practices came into games companies
for example, up until ~2009, jagex did not use version control
>>378677517

>>378678651
And this is one of the things, the truth is there must have been dozens of copies just in CDs for their employees. Unless you're actually thinking it was "the" SC source code and not one of many copies
>>378679387
Considering it was lost for 20 years, and only after reciving it did they bother update it to modern PC's even when they included the game for the collectors edition of SC 2 WoL, I'd say yeah, it was probably the only copy of it they could get their hands on. Blizzard of old was probably a lot more careless than they are today.
>>378679773

that place was the Mutually Assured Destruction theory of vanilla world PvP.
Horde groups and Alliance groups would have an intensely tenuous relationship as they both left each other alone while they did their quests, always knowing that they could annihilate their enemy but always cautiously watching their own backs.
it was a razor-thin relationship, and it took nothing more than a pin-drop for them to turn on each other, and to turn the whole place into bloody chaos.

>Start running one way while he's charging towards me, stealth, double-back, run into a bush on the opposite side of the road, and press "X" to sit. My model is entirely inside the bush
>At this point the Paladin is where I was a moment ago, spinning around in circles trying to find me, undoubtedly getting the de-stealthing "fwoosh" sound over and over on account of how huge his sight range must be because of his level but unable to locate me
>About thirty seconds after that, he starts Consecrating the ground at random in an attempt to catch me and de-stealth me with the damage
>The only thing saving me is that I'm in a bush and, even if I'm fully visible to him, being in Stealth hides my glowing red name-plate. If I were to leave the bush he'd see me immediately.
>He knows I'm there because he keeps getting the damn "fwoosh" noise anyway, so I start emoting at him from inside the bush
>He never does catch me, and leaves a few minutes later with no dead orcs to his name.

I never understood what it did wrong though.
Heroics were hard again and raiding was fun, but I just stopped caring for some reason.
The best explanation I could come up with is that daily LFD took all the skill out of dungeons because raiders would just carry groups through and they call became complacent. Then when they actually had to think in heroics again they couldn't cut it and it was no fun getting thrown into groups of idiots who couldn't figure out to get out of the fire.

Its greatest sin was the old world rework. It sucked all of the charm out of the world and the leveling experience. On top of that was the Horde vs. Alliance war getting turned on again. The setting worked best as a cold war-esque conflict between two superpowers.
Gameplay-wise, the dungeons never stood out to me in the way that earlier ones did. Pandering to "hardcore" players and requiring CC in group content might be good on paper, but they'd already trained the players to run dungeons by grouping and AOEing. When you fuck that up, it's hard to go back, and of course they nerfed shit.
Cataclysm was half-baked, and it showed in a lot of places.

For me there was no charm because I was an idiot who didn't talk to other players to figure out the best way to level and get gear and stuff. I actually gave up playing BC when I hit level 32 because I didn't have enough money for skills and new equipment. Plus yeah everyone was in Outland so I was just trying to catch up.
But I guess one problem with the whole phasing thing is that it divides players, and I found leveling in cata to be just as grating as BC.
Even as a DK tank I really hated the AOE thing, and I was happy they tried to get rid of it, but you're right.
And yet I mean reworking vanilla was kind of stupid. I always felt like the big problem for wow was that expansion were basically self-contained. During BC it wasn't fun being stuck in all the old empty zones while everyone else was flying around in Outland and talking about Illidan and Kael, but they should have just let you skip the shit instead of screwing with everything.

i cant imagine being so sad that the word comfy makes you this angry
You know I have a theory that we can all never fully experience anything even remotely MMORPG related again due to the internet being so goddamn prevalent nowadays. Back then - maybe because I was a teen but still - the time when WoW launched wasn't that many years from me calling Nintendo-helpdesks from the yellow pages because I was a shitter and didn't know how to proceed. And fucking everyone jumped on WoW, nobody had Steam, WhatsApp, the guides and online FAQs were limited or so shit they'd be ignored so you were pretty much forced to interact and learn together.
If a game like this, or with the same intentions and scope came out now we would all just be speedreading manuals on how to git gud and ignore any form of social interaction. The only remedy I can imagine is making a game and making it impossible to share info about it aside from when in the game itself. The level of community can't be achieved without it and we're all suffering from it.
>>378666817
Who else wielded the absolute destructive power of Undead Shadow Priest in vanilla?
