How come they don't make new games? Who owns the franchise anyway?

I know RTS is pretty much dead, but shouldn't Dune be valuable enough to warrant some games?
>>
Leave it to Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. Dune isn't the type of series that does well in any other medium, the perspective shifts of time and reality only work within your own imagination.
>>
>>378664450
well, yeah, the book plot does, but they can still make games set in the universe, right?
>>
>>378663496
that is a scary cover
>>
Dune isn't really suited for anything but RTS
For else is there to make, spice trading simulator?
>>
>>378664450
this is the same dumb criticism leveraged against Dune adaptations. Dune is not that unique dude. It, like most anything, can be adapted... come up with something original to say.

Legendary has TV and Film rights to Dune as of last year.
>>
>>378666203
Make it like civ but with worms?
>>
>>378666203
Didn't someone make a Dune porn game?
Not sure if that even counts
>>
>>378666203
4X suits it more than RTS.

>>378666290
It's not dumb, though? So much of what makes Dune work happens inside character's heads. Some of the most intense scenes are two characters talking to each other, with narration exposing their thoughts and the struggle behind words. It's hard to do justice in movie form, for a video game all you can hope for is taking the external aspects of the settings like shields, melee combat, worms, spice, sand and running with them.
>>
>>378666203
Really? Because the first Dune game wasn't a RTS game and it was pretty good.

Uncharted-style action adventure?

RPG?
>>
>>378666578
It was literally done in the David Lynch Dune, and in any good adaptation you're not supposed to copy 1:1 the source material. Films have different strengths than books, so any actually well done adaptation will make it work. Dune's story is not untranslateable and the world is certainly full of potential stories and settings that can be used for games, film, whatever.

Your thinking IS dumb because you don't understand any of the actual craft that goes into adapting.
>>
>>378666610
>>378666649
Dune adventure games would be great. I'd love to see more of them.
>>
>>378666891
>It was literally done in the David Lynch Dune
You mean, the adaptation that took the external elements and did them justice, had some strong performances and shat on pretty much everything about the narrative?
>in any good adaptation you're not supposed to copy 1:1 the source material
True, but at what point it stops being Dune and starts being Dune-inspired?

I'm excited for possible Villeneuve movie, btw, because he can direct some pretty scenes at least.

>>378667067
There's no arguing with you because you already believe that Dune is full of so much essential detail and nuance that it cannot be summarized unless on pages of paper. The Lynch film had great faithful segments, and its problem was that it was a butchered and halted project in the first place. What was there was good, true to the spirit of Dune, as accurate as it needed to be. Hell, it could be argued that the film was perhaps too faithful to the design of the book at some points.

>>378666290
Not that guy ... but here I go:

The size of everything is too big to be successfully represented in anything but strategy games.
A lot of character development is happening through long dialogues AND descriptive narration.
Excluding last three prequel books you'd have movie adaptations that would be closest to drama-documentaries.

As for games other then RTSes... there are few point and click adventures and strategies from 90s.
The only selling point for anything else would be dune worms and we still don't have technology to represent them as anything else as maybe map locations (and gears already did that)
>>
>>378667554
I guess so. For what it's worth I think that Dune only makes sense with at least Messiah/Children, which a lot of people hate because they make obvious what is hinted at in the original, the fact that Paul utterly fails in preventing the Jihad, that his victory is ultimately a larger defeat. People don't generally like it, they prefer to see Dune as a straight hero's journey. I don't think any movie would play that part straight. Wouldn't be a satisfying ending.

It was a fucking incredibly fun game, with an awesome soundtrack that pushed the OPL chip so hard that to this day still none of the emulators can do it justice (and the reason why I think Dosbox still sucks).

I legit enjoyed Dune 1 more than Dune 2 or Dune 2000.

Emperor: Battle for Dune kicked ass though. The Harkonnen campaign was so fucking awesome, you could pick between Sting and his fatass brother and have a different ending for each. And the Atreides mentat was Premier Romanov from Red Alert 2.

That's the Adlib Gold version with the Surround module attached.

There were maybe 5 people worldwide who actually get to play the game that way. I sounds so fucking great, like those 1950s sci-fi b-movie soundtracks done on a theremin.

The normal Adlib version is also great, sounds a bit more chiptune-ish, but the title song is twice as long for some reason.

Not sure, here is the change log for v13 though:

What's new in 13:
-With the voice, every Fremen has a blowjob scene. Jessica can teach you that early in the game, after the Reverend Mother test.
-Jessica gives the Voice level 2 in Sietch Ergsun, later (so you can unlock the 4 last month's scenes).
-Jessica riding Paul, and her blowjobs with her different appearances (naked or not, tied hair or not). It's a bit hidden. You can use the Voice on her, after being an expert (after you used it on 3 Fremen, and tried 3 times unsuccessfully on Jessica).

Many details to make the game cleaner (you seen in the GIF):
-Harvester works outside of a sietch when a troop has one.
-The smuggler village visible from far, like all the other places.
-Things that were sketchy are done: Stilgar dead, Vladimir dead, Duncan facing harkonnen soldiers.
-Jessica's vagina was bad in the ghola sex scene. It's corrected.

Also Here is the final version on the artist's website too:
http://davidgoujard.com/btd.html
>>
>>378672137
Their hair and clothing is almost never mentioned in any detail beyond the color or general style. I think the most in-depth it ever got was that Emperor Corrino had red hair like the rest of his bloodline and that the Bene Gesserit wore robes that may or may not have doubled as hammocks but it's been a while since I last read Dune.

>Do these games hold up still?

The first Dune game absolutely holds up well, just make sure you play the floppy disc version. The FMV one has the cool sprite animation replaced by really fugly FMVs (they were extremely impressive for 1991 considering that a CD-ROM cost as much as a PC at the time).

The second game (the Westwood RTS) holds up considerably worse due to having very early RTS controls. The biggest offender is not being able to select multiple units simultaneously, which makes the game extremely problematic.
