So Pokemon was supposed to be the equivalent of a bug catching hobby before many video games were around. Does this mean that Pokemon battlers who hang out around the roads are just people who don't do much else with themselves? Like Pokemon battling is their main thing?
>>
>>378660654
reminds me of the team fortress 2 mercenaries in that aspect. all they do with their time is kill people
>>
The difference is that Pokemon are an integral part of pretty much every facet of life in their world. It's always like that with these kinds of franchises.

Like in Beyblade, battling toy tops is somehow the most culturally important and popular sport in the world somehow.
>>
>>378660654
A lot of them have normal jobs I'd assume, you just happen to catch them wandering around looking for battles. I mean, who else would run the shops, pokecenters, construction, restaurants, power plants, pokeball manufacturing, etc. Why do you think most of them suck? Cause it's a hobby for them.
>>
>>378660925
It makes more sense with pets that can replace industrial construction equipment and manual labor with ease.
>>
>>378660925
>Like in Beyblade, battling toy tops is somehow the most culturally important and popular sport in the world somehow.

Hey, just like starcraft in korea.
>>
>>378661182
Portable starcraft rigs a-la yu-gi-ho duel disk-gauntlet-board thingies for on-the-fly Starcraft matches when?
>>
>>378660654
There are very little actual trainers and most people just have pokemon integrated into mundane labor.
>>
>>378661054
>A lot of them have normal jobs I'd assume
most people in the pokemon universe arent trainers.

pokemon trainers are just one profession of many, and most of them are dirt poor compared to the rest.
>>
>>378661068
not to mention that if cockfighting with dragons was an actual thing IRL, other sports would go extinct pretty quickly
>>
>>378662004
a lot of pokemon trainers have actual jobs as well, it's mostly a very common hobby/sport

there are folks who can actually make a living off it but they're like our sport stars
>>
>>378662263
>a lot of pokemon trainers have actual jobs as well, it's mostly a very common hobby/sport
none of the ones that travel have actual jobs so no this is completely wrong.

ash is perpetually broke throughout the show and hes constantly begging for free food.
>>
>>378661865
>>378662004
And not unlike real life, most of the best trainers pick it up once they are set for life

Most if not all elite and champions are filthy rich
>>
>>378662398
This, however, being rich doesn't mean you'd be a good trainer.
After all, the best pokemon have a very high chance of killing you.
>>
>>378662580
this is actually represented ingame with the "rich boy/girl" class
they tend to have rare pokemon and use expensive items during battle (full restores and what not) but generally speaking they are not particularly difficult
not compared to say the ace trainers and veterans which actually get higher leveled pokemon with better movesets
>>
>>378661054
Are pokeballs made in poke America or poke China?
>>
>>378662370
eh you don't really know that, classes like hikers could very well have a proper job, they're just on vacation

and it honestly doesn't make a lot of sense for Ash to be broke, he's a fairly high tier athlete consistently placing in the top ranks of major tournaments, he should be able to live comfortably of his prize money
>>
>>378663042
Pokeballs in china.
Greatballs in America
Ultraballs in Japan
Masterballs in Germany
The rest of the balls are made locally.
>>
>>378663339
>Masterballs in Germany
AHAHAHAHAHAHHA maybe cuck balls
>>
>>378663042
Johto is China, and pokeballs were invented there sorta, since Apricorns.
So maybe.

>>378663339
There are like 10 masterballs in the world I think they're all made at the Silph Headquarters in Saffron.
>>
>>378663339
All regular balls (and the master ball) are made by Silph Co. and thus Japanese
Devon Co. makes most of the specialty balls and is also Japanese
>>
>>378660654

No. The game was inspired from bug catching. What was your first gen? Gen 3? Sit the fuck down you noob.

that said, they're not commercially available and probably custom made on request only.
Thus their status as high end prices in game shows, they probably cost as much as a modern day designer sport car.

>>
>>378662370
>>378663142
Ash is underage, most of them are, anyone can be a trainer but only registered ones (the ones who own trainer cards) can challenge gyms, when they reach a certain age they can go on a journey and fight people along the way

>>

>>
>>378660654
Most Pokémon trainers you meet in the game are total casuals who do it to kill time from time to time.
Sometimes you find professional trainers. Some of them are from the Ace Trainer and Veteran class. To not talk about Gyms and the E4.

In Black and White there's various dialogues from trainers that imply so.
>>
>>378664130
>Red is the reason why there's so many Masterballs in the market now
>>378663931
I guess they are just very hard to make but not incredibly expensive. They are probably some military grade equipment that most people shouldn't have, otherwise they could catch any pokemon they wanted without having a trainer badge, thus increasing injuries caused by unruly home owned pokemon.
>>
>>378662370
>none of the ones that travel have actual jobs so no this is completely wrong.
They're competitors in a sport the biggest sport on the planet. most of them are amateur and only make enough money for the roof over their heads but competitions like the Indigo League should pay out huge money as it is one of the premiere leagues for the sport.
>>
>>378664094
I'm assuming trainer cards are fairly common and the only reason an adult in the pokemon universe doesn't have one is if it was revoked by the government due to criminal activities

everyone can technically challenge gyms but most people simply aren't good enough to do it.

And the games' protagonists tend to be fairly wealthy (then again they should be given their status as champion)

but you're probably right in that they're very difficult to make which in turn would make them really fucking expensive

heck the only time the master ball is given to you by an average person is in GSC when Elm hands you one, all other times they're either given by the head of the company that makes them for saving his life or else found in the stash of a major criminal organization

yugioh is still mostly a childrens card game
>>

the government and economy system in the Pokemon world is just one big riddle that is never explained well enough.

only the restrictions about only being able to carry 6 balls have been explained as some sort of law but that's about it.

I sometimes think that Giovanni might be the only sensible person around who just shuns the government because it's too restrictive in every way of life and therefore he runs a pokemon mafia because fuck not playing by your own rules.

Oh yeah, not arguing that. For some reason, the longer a series set in the present goes on, the farther it goes into insanely advanced technological developments, like the monsters in YGO changing from largely goblin-type things, old 90's style robots, and heroes and stuff, to robotic dragons, solid holograms, and a monster type based on sentient computer programs given robotic bodies, with a world setting to match. Shit's nuts. I mean sometimes they look rather nice, but it's very over the top a lot of the time.
>>
>>378667585
I guess it would do that, yeah.
I haven't had the time to watch so much 5Ds but I assume that thing runs on fucking "duel energy" and I just read that if it shuts down then the entire New Domino City would suffer a power blackout. that's kinda retarded only relying on one center power source. but yeah, dueling is a prettyfucking huge deal in that universe, if not the biggest.
>>
>>378667867
>>378668228

I love what a mess Yugioh is these days.
Arc V is superfun with that whole entertainment and show dueling and then being able to ride on summoned monsters and all that shit.
>>
>>378668228
It's still hilarious how Yugioh didn't even start out as a TCG.
I'm still baffled as to how that switch happened.
>>
>>378667819
B-Daman? Bakugan?
>>378668247
It accelerates the power reactor, which already produces perpetual energy. It's actually a bad thing if there are TOO many duels because it will cause an overflow error and make the reactor either enter "Zero Reverse" and nuke the area, or if it's with a sudden massive burst/people realize it needs to be shut down/people are too angry or some shit, it produces machines to keep itself protected and the machines actually fully exterminated all of humanity in the future. BECAUSE OF THOSE GODDAMN CARD GAMES.

In the manga, which came first, it was simply focused around yami yugi and various "shadow games" and dangerous gambles to punish people, such as playing air hockey on a grill but with a puck that is a lump of ice with explosives inside, or stabbing a stack of money on your hand with the loser being the one to stab themselves.

It seemed to me that nobody had anything to say that wasn't about Pokemon, no place had anything to do that wasn't about Pokemon, and there was no reason to be training other than pure brainwashing by a culture so obsessed with a gay sport that there is no other economy around to even consider getting into. What are humans in the pokemon universe then? It seems really convenient that a single species emerged that had this symbiotic power to bond with all the other species. Sentience is the deal breaker. At least for people who are vegetarian for moral reasons. If the thing "is" then it's not okay.

Well you have to consider there is a League going on, which is more popular than football, and where everyone can participate.
Gyms are pretty large so it's a well run institution.
It's implied to play during summer vacation, this is why kids are able to run outside and travel the general area on their own.
And the casuals you battle are all hopefuls, yet you are the one who puts them into place. If they can't beat you, how can they hope beating 8 gym leaders.

And then you have the bad guys, and it's up to you to prevent the game from becoming FarCry: Pokémon

Only if they give you a piece of themselves. I don't recommend biting into a razor leaf though.

I wonder how many Pokemon attacks, besides stuff like Milk Drink, are edible..

Gen I Pokémon is basically a fictionalized version of the real world, but not to the degree that later games are.
カントー地方 (Kantō-chihou; Kanto region) vs 関東地方 (Kantou-chihou; Kantō region)
The name of the region was deliberately meant to be near identical to the real life Kantō region. If future Pokémon games had kept up this level of reference, Johto would have been the Kansai region (カンサイ地方 vs 関西地方). The stylistic difference comes from using katakana in place of kanji (which Pokémon games before Gen V didn't use except for 円) or hiragana.

All actual locales were renamed to fit a color, which makes it feel more like a placeholder.
マサラタウン (Masara Town/Pallet Town)
トキワシティ (Tokiwa City/Viridian City)
ニビシティ (Nibi City/Pewter City)
ハナダシティ (Hanada City/Cerulean City)
クチバシティ (Kuchiba City/Vermillion City)
シオンタウン (Shion Town/Lavender Town)
タマムシシティ (Tamamushi City/Celadon City)
ヤマブキシティ (Yamabuki City/Saffron City)
セキチクシティ (Sekichiku City/Fuchsia City)
グレンタウン (Guren Town/Cinnabar Island)

When Lt. Surge mentions having served in a war, chances are he was referring to the Gulf War, not some war specific to the world of Pokémon. His likeness could very well be based on the current American Secretary of Defense James Mattis, whose last name is very similar to Surge's in Japanese and who served in the Gulf War.
マチス (Machisu; Matis vs マティス Matisu; Mattis)

Since Pokémon has grown into its own thing, it has tried more to be its own world. Alola is based on Hawaii, but it probably would have just been called Hawaii in Gen I.

Several Pokedex entries refer to other real life animals, especially in Gen 1.

Plus if you consider that Pikachu is an 'electric mouse' Pokemon, then that means that 'mice' must exist in the Pokemon universe.

There was a reason the older volumes of the YGO manga were rated higher on the age rating stuff than the modern ones. A lot of it was cut from the anime but the less violent ones like the clock guy made it in.
