Why can't single player first person shooters just be fun

Without good multiplayer these games are a play once and never play again. Since BF1 cod and overwatch dominate the multiplayer scene it is hard for these titles to take off. People want replay ability in modern games.

I wanted to recommend you Call of Juarez: Gunslinger because its a good singleplayer shooter, but it too has upgrade mechanics. I can't even recall a shooter released within the last few years that didn't feature a mechanic like that. Serious Sam 3 maybe?

At this point it feels like upgrades and crafting have mostly replaced mastering mechanics and becoming skillful in shooters.
