The source code is based on the 1.1 version (last official one) and they won't be releasing source code for the updated unofficial builds from what I know so right now 1.2 and it's smaller updates (up to 1.2.8 so far) are PC exclusive at the moment.

Obviously some of the additional superfluous powerups are part of why this is the case (hint: Metroid 2 didn't need beamstacking). Just absurd power levels

I'll give you that, but AM2R makes up for it in hardware advances; better lighting and graphical effects, better music and sounds, better enemy behaviors and encounters, and some of the Metroid fights can still feel really tense, stressful, or claustrophobic. That one Zeta (I think) Metroid that's at the end of a dark hallway in a hidden room in the tower is probably one of the most memorable ones because of how tense the moment is, thanks to dark lighting, tense music, and an ominous presence being that you know what's coming.

I've moved on. A new Metroid seems as likely as HL3 at this point. Other people have adopted the formula better anyway. Recently I've played Axiom Verge, Hollow Knight, Rabi Ribi, Momodora IV, La Mulana and , Salt and Sanctuary to scratch my Metroid itch and they've all been pretty damn good.

Nintendo sucks and nintendo fans suck. Let Metroid stay dead and grow roses on its grave.
