did your opinion change growing up?

playstation was a shovelware console

Most levels in Mario 64 were boring and grosly unimaginative. The Crash series looked better and more diverse in it's level design. Super Mario Sunshine was a lot better with vibrant colors and fun level design.

I had a PS1 in my early teen age years tho. I got very upset when I found out that Mario 64 was far superior to Crash.

Spyro has the best level design in any 3D platformer. Tree Tops and Haunted Towers are fucking phenomenal.

Mario 64 has perfect platforming physics, Crash has solid difficulty but I'd consider it lesser than either Spyro or Mario.

My best friend owned a NES, SNES, and N64 while I owned a Playstation. He had a Playstation as well. Even playing at his house I was never particularly regretful that I didn't have an N64, and it wasn't long until NES and SNES emulators started getting good. The N64 only had a few games in comparison the monstrous amount of choice the PS had. I never minded the wobbly polygons or anything since I thought it gave it character, along with the very detailed textures and better music. N64 felt too clean.

Then the Playstation 2 came out which was fully backwards compatible so there was no reason at all to have an N64. Never bothered with the Gamecube since the only game I ever liked playing on it was Smash Bros.
>>
>>378625029
Funny that someone with an N64 would complain about shitty textures when that system has the texture resolution of a god damn potato.

Seriously, all the N64 games just look straight up muddy and unappealing, PS1 textures are crisp in comparison.
>>
>>378626905
Gex is alright, it's clearly weaker than most of the good 3D platformers but it's a competent game.

The horror levels in the second game are real spooky.

Nah, but I did watch a shitload of Jackie Chan when I was younger, pretty sure it was the influence of this.
>>
I live in Slovakia and and got my PS1 around 2001-2002. I have a lot of friends here or in Czech Republic and nobody ever owned a nintendo console. Im not talking about wii or 3ds, but the ones where you could play games like zelda or super smash bros. Everyone owned a playstation. I wish I could play Mario and compare it...

Today, nothing changed, nobody here owns a nintendo console or switch. I dont know if its marketing or something else but people play on Xbox 360, xbox one, ps3 and ps4. Right now I have PS1, PS2, PSP and PS Vita. I rarely use them becaue every game I play is only on PC.

I feel that I was missing out because when I watch streams/tournaments in smash bros or streetfighter people are hyped and it looks fun. With Crash remaster coming out I am really considering to buy cheapest PS4 to play it (for 195€ = 218$)
>>
>>378627785
Spyro still has the best 3D level design yo. Crash's levels are linear corridors and SM64 has a ton of sporadic floating polygons. Tree Tops is pure 3D platforming perfection.

Agreed. Never understood the appeal of SM64. Big, open levels with barely any enemies in them that you plod around in until you figure out the right way to get to the top of wherever for your same one collectathon item over and over for the occasional privilege of getting to repeat the same Bowser fight again (like a fucking NES game). It is and always was boring from day 1. People just creamed over the 3D graphics, face stretching, paintings and snow level, the only things the game has going for it, and their nostalgia won't let go.
>>
>>378630983
The controls are crisp as fuck though. This was a problem I had with Ocarina of Time, the controls were ass compared to the fluidity of SM64.

>Owned Mario 64, Banjo, Crash, and Spyro as a kid
I guess I had the best childhood.
>>
>>378624036
I didn't even know the PlayStation existed till the PS2. I had an N64 growing up, and an NES and SNES prior to. I'd never even heard of Sega till my cousin brought his Dreamcast over when I was 9. Same for the PS2. I played it and Tony Hawk and Max Paine and Crash on my friends PS when going over to his house at the ages of 9/10.

To me, Nintendo was all there was as a kid. I had no idea there were other platforms.

After experiencing the games on PlayStation for the first time, on my 11th birthday, I was given a choice by my parents, for either a Gamecube, a PS2, or an Xbox. I personally wanted a PS2, but ultimately my parents convinced me to get a Gamecube cause they felt the games were more kid friendly. I don't regret it, as I got a chance to get Melee, which in the end became one of my favorite games of all time, but in hindsight, part of me wishes I had gone with the PS2, as IT had many great games I missed out on in their prime, and part of me regrets not being able to experience FFVII and MGS as a teen. Not only that, but choosing the Gamecube is what made me stick with Nintendo during the Wii and WiiU, and both were imo terrible consoles. Likewise, had I gone with the PS2, I don't think I would have gotten caught in the autism trap that was post Gen2 Pokemon. I feel the more "mature" and diverse games on Sony consoles would have swayed away my more easily influenced childhood mind from deluding itself into thinking those games were any good, and that I should have wasted so much time with those autism simulators.

I had both consoles as a child. They both had their strengths and weaknesses. That being said there are certain arguments people would use when they say they had both that are a dead give away they're fucking lying.
In regards to platformers, the N64 was the winner. There's just no question about it. You just couldn't play something like Mario 64 and then go to crash bandicoot and not be complete underwhelmed. Even Spyro couldn't really compare.
When it came to graphics the N64 was the easy winner again. The PS1 had better textures, but it didn't fucking matter with no z buffering all the polygons looked like they were flipping the fuck out and it was just awful. The ps1 was just not 3d ready.
The ps1 did far better with 2d games though. it was truly a 2d console that could do some 3d on the side, even if in practice it played out the opposite way.
When either console was playing to it's strengths and avoiding it's weaknesses they were good. I personally got more out of my n64 and the small but good library than I ever did out of my ps1. Not many ps1 games I'd like to go back to today, while N64 has some gems I'd play out of nostalgia.
>>
Had N64 when I was a kid, but Spyro was objectively the best.

I didn't have both, I had an N64, but I wouldn't say either one knocked it out of the park.

I have games I replay continuously on both systems, or at least games that came out on both systems.

You had Final Fantasy VII and R4 on the one hand and F-Zero X and Starfox 64 on the other you know. Silent Hill and Xenogears on the one hand and Blast Corps and Mario 64 on the other.

Of course now its like Blast Corps on Xbox One/R4 on the Vita/F-Zero X on the Wii U, but the same games.

What's weird is a lot of the fondly remembered games from that era are actually unplayable garbage like Tomb Raider or Goldeneye.

I had the Crash childhood. But when I was younger I never felt the need to play Nintendo consoles because their consoles were more expensive.
Then I grew up and I played Mario 64 on DS and I loved it. In those years I learned to love Nintendo and today I still do.
In the last few years I managed to re-play Crash games and I was baffled and how good they still are today and how their design choices are so similar to games like Mario Galaxy (both of them) and 3D World, both my favourite 3D Mario games.

So yeah, I had the bad childhood, I guess.
