If your stuck on like the first or second level then yes, kill yourself. If your stuck on like level 4+ than it is genuinely hard. Probably the most important thing in old castlevanias is spacing, your whip has good range but a bit of a wind up, so you need to keep your distance from enemies to use your whip to maximum effect. For Medusa Heads, anticipate where they will be rather than looking at where they are currently.

Personally I'll save state at the various checkpoint doors if I'm playing through for the first time. Once I beat the game though and replay it I don't use save states.
