How come people shit on sports games nowadays when in the 90s

I miss a lot of the arcadey sports games like NBA Street and NFL Blitz.

The only problem I have with sports games these days is how many microtransactions they shove into them. Just make the damn games F2P already.

It's a few reasons in my opinion.

1. Elitism. Sports games have largely been adopted by and are now associated with casual gamers, non-gamers, jocks/meatheads, etc. and 'hardcore' gamers don't want to associate themselves with them.

2. Sports games have largely stagnated and have become too commercialized. There's very little variation in sports games, they all try to be as realistic as possible. Very few go for that arcadey experience anymore.

3. Once you've played one, you've played them all mentality which is both justified and unjustified. There's only so much you can do with Basketball or Football or Hockey before it gets boring to a lot of people so a lot of people will write off games automatically for that reason. Up to the PS2 era though, there was a fair bit of variety in the games though. Not all the games were that serious sim experience, some were goofy or had interesting gimmicks to change it up. It comes to #2 where it's just kind of stagnated.

These the best sports games. A issue with the later ones is that they are too slow. Compare bBlitz from 5th gen to 6th gen. More animations, transitions, and loading. They are still fun to play, but more animations makes them too slow. This is a time when short, cheap motions and less data works better for the game. New Blitz or Jam will probably be packed with little things that makes the actual game slower, which is unfortunate.

Miu is a funny case. Her route is completely slice of life with just a little story. She has less backstory and plot than all the other girls, it's like a different writer did Miu.

The only Yuzusoft game where main girl is far and away the best is Sanoba Witch. The others are a mixed bag. In Tenshin Ranman I liked the sister way more than the goddess. Noble Works I liked just about every other girl more than Akari but I'm fond of Sena and Chizuru in particular. Amairo Islenauts I actually like Shirley a lot, shes second place for me. I love Yune though. Senren Banka, Yoshino is so bland that all the other girls win by default.

Sanoba Witch is the one time Yuzusoft pulled a True End card with Nene. They kind of did that with the PSP version of Tenshin Ranman with the new girl who I really liked. I still preferred Sakuya over the sister.

Noble Works had me choose Maya as my favorite and Shirley in Amairo was definitely a great one too. Murasame was my favorite in Senren Banka. I had no idea what they were thinking just ending the main plot in the common route.

Miu is probably my number 2, at worst my number 3. I like Miu, I wish her route had more to it though. Elina is my favorite, Rio and Miu fighting for that #2 for me. I like Azusa, she's cute but her route is the longest and in no way justifies that length. It was so drawn out and boring it actually reduced her in my rankings. I though she would be my favorite but she ended up #4. Hated Nicola, no contest for last place.

The lack of Hiyori route is a crime.

My 'favorite' is probably Sanoba Witch.

I really really like the setting of Dracu-Riot! But they do nothing with it. I love the setting of Senren Banka too, it's a beautiful game art wise but again the writing falls short.

I like Amairo more than Noble Works mainly for fetish fuel. NW is probably at the middle bottom for me. Tenshin Ranman is just wasted potential, outside of 1 route I wasn't that fond of it.

Overall I'm probably at SW > SB > AI > DR > NW > TR.

Everybody's Golf on PS4 and Golf Story on switch look like a lot of arcadey-fun. The former lets you drive golf carts everywhere and the latter has that comfy RPG like play that Mario Golf on GBC had.

Senren Banka was carried ENTIRELY by the art for me. By the time I read it I was somewhat sick of Yuzusoft's writing. The girls are cute and likeable enough but the story is fucking bleh. The game isn't offensive, it's just boring a lot of the time. They know how to do cute girls though, that's the only thing that kept me going. Yoshino is fucking adorable, the ninja girl is pretty cute but her route is shit, sword girl is pretty cute but her route was boring, Lena's route was cute but they might as well just called it big titties the route, Roka best girl best route, the other girl was meh. They need new writers man.

Sports games were always shitty. They were usually more fun to play with a group precisely because they were so shit, that everyone had the same chances, and because everyone could roughly understand the rules of the game. Outside something like NBA Jam, most people didn't care much for sports titles.

It wasn't until Nintendo started doing the various Mario sports spinoffs that we saw some fun ones. Hell, that was when wrestling games started coming out, and while those has shit controls, they came out around the same time.
