There are 6.2 gorrilion games on steam.
How does anything without a huge marketing budget or social media exposure make any money?
Why even bother making a new videogame?
presumably, the developer enjoys making the game and is artistically satisfied in the act of making something that they are interested in
Hopefully the dev has enough confidence in his ability or his idea that others with the same interests will be drawn to it and hopefully buy it
You see, if you make a good game then people play it and recommend it and do lets play and shit. This is a trick a lot of indie devs still haven't figured out.

artistic satisfaction doesn't pay the bills, and there's a bajillion other guys you have to compete with

Which would make me not want to bother working on a game, even if I knew I could make a good one; odds are it'd just get buried regardless of merit

you gotta really unironically love your game
and your taste must not be shit

This is the best answer and yet you didn't reply to it OP. Why?

You're super naive if you think word of mouth is the golden net that saves developers.

It's one thing to make a game. It's another to turn it into a business, and it's tough shit you gotta suck up if you think business isn't a competitive, proactive process.
So many sink. So many I've had to watch sink.

That's why you just pay a few YouTubers to play it, which they will if it's good.

sometimes you hit the lottery
outside of that it's not exactly a great industry to try to get into if your product isn't competitive in some fashion
this applies to anything for which there is a limited amount of attention, like books or music
