Just remember you can forge weapons into other weapons to carry over damage and other shit so you end up with dual blades with axe damage. My favorite Rune Factory so far. The main town and the characters are great, and exploring the ocean with a giant golem is pretty awesome. The farming isn't very good but there's so much to do in that game that it doesn't really need good farming.

I think the only away to raise the quality of those sorts of misc items is by using the shield maiden crop circle and placing it next your maker.

I know you can turn rock salt into salt with one of the makers, but I don't think you can make coffee packs with anything.
Some people have pets that bring them misc items and level those pets to get better items. That combined with the shield maiden statue would be a nice way to raise stars.
Besides pets I don't think you can level those wild herbs without waiting in-game years.
