Yes, Nintendo gave Sakmoto complete control of the main series (2D) since he's the last member of the original Metroid team that made Metroid 1-3. Tanabe was given complete control of the Metroid Prime franchise after Miyamoto moved on to work on other projects starting with Metroid Prime 2.
