6800K->7800X (?) 6c/12t
6850K($610)->7820X($499) 8c/16t
6900k($1000)->7900X($799) 10c/20t
6950X($1700)->7920X($1200) 12c/24t

So the 7800x looks like the best buy right? expect it has a piss poor amount of l2/l3 cache, is 140w compared to ryzen 1600 65w and with a new 2066 motherboard will be almost double the price of a 1600.

I think these will sell poorly, they will need to drop the prices on coffeelake.

The primary cores are already at 100%+. The whole parralization is still shit cause the cores hardly get utilized equally. You are either way limited by the primary thread sitting on the first core. More cores just means more small tasks getting flipped arround more but it can't decrease the load of the primary thread on the first core.

Result is it's still running the same way. What you need it primarily better programming utilizing cores better. Until you get that more cores can't help.
>>
>>378426439
The Intel one is 30~ Mhz less if that matters also I don't think the game can properly use all cores but I honestly don't know

Overwatch is extremely popular and uses 6 cores. Ubisoft games like AssCreed/Division greatly benefit from more cores. Crysis 3 grass level near the start runs like ass on any i5. thats just off the top of my head, I bet strategy games like total war warhammer run way better on i7/hex cores compared to i5.

I bet you bought a Dual Core E8400 over a Quad Core Q6600 because "games only use 2 cores".

If you are looking to keep a pc for a few years, a quad core is a really poor choice at this moment in time, you should have bought it 5+ years ago. Been around a decade and are on their way out.

pic related not even that demanding of a game pegs my 2500k @ 4.8ghz, stutters like fuck unless I use DSR 1440p and cap the framerate to 75

>Now running games at 60 FPS plus 1440p
>>
>>378427231
Im on 120hz not 60hz, if you just want 60fps locked an i5 will be fine for most games (not all i.e. crysis 3)

higher framerate = more work for the cpu, and when it hits 100% enjoy them stutters
>>
Did these new processors really need to require a new type of RAM or did they just do it on purpose to sell something new and expensive?
>>
>>378427294
1080p and uncapped framerate is much more cpu demanding than 1440p locked 60fps. thats something you do to avoid the cpu bottleneck of 1080p and uncapped framerate/stutters
>>
>>378427406
DDR4 has been out for months, what are you talking about?
You can still buy 1151 boards with DDR4 slots.
>>
>>378422019
Literally DoA.
>>
>>378427231
60+fps in 1440p is more GPU bound than CPU bound. It's really only when you try to hit 120-144fps, usually at 1080p, that the CPU difference shows. At that point RAM speeds also become a more important factor. That's why AMD wanted reviewers to run benchmarks of Ryzen 7 in 4k, so that the performance disparity between the i7-7700k wouldn't show because of the GPU bottleneck.

I agree that the i5s since sandybridge have been a great buy, but you'd have to be retarded to buy a modern i5, especially when you can get a 6c/12t cpu with slightly less IPC for the same price.

Modern i5s (kaby lake) are literally the same as sandybridge with a 20% ipc boost. I want to replace my 2500k and theres no way id shell out $300-350 for the same cpu with a 20% ipc boost when I see my 2500k hitting 100% usage in nearly every 2016/2017 game unless I cap the framerate.

On that note

What you can expect:

1. Recalls - initial release is going to see a 5-10% failure rate.

2. Overclocking breaking it

3. Poor threading performance

4. A modest price probably around 400 dollars

What will happen 6 months later

1. Announce an enhanced version for overclocking

2. Fixed multi core threading

3. will be 450-500 dollars

There will be one more version that follows being the Hardcore version which is the actual final product without any of the faults implemented

>The primary cores are already at 100%+. The whole parralization is still shit cause the cores hardly get utilized equally.

Not necessarily. You only expect to see roughly equal utilization of each core if you're maxing out the whole system.

However, the way CPUs are structured makes them fundamentally poor for parallelization, due to the complexity required of software to fully overcome synchronization and false sharing issues. GPGPU is the future of video games (it's already the PRESENT of scientific computing etc). The CPU will mostly be around to drive the GPU. For that purpose, a handful of really fast cores will be ideal. These core-ridden CPUs are a marketing gimmick.
>>
>>378432608
I meant it's about the same performance, not necessarily better, for gaming than Intel's CPUs at equal price tiers.
Overall still a great purchase.

Oh look, a retard. Find me a way to make GPU ops to branch properly first.
>>
>>378424468
It's a half-meme.

As long as you don't go overboard but spend a reasonable amount you should edge out consoles and have a relative savings if you buy a large number of games.

There are other benefits but if money is a limiting factor I would go for whatever lets you play with friends, assuming you have any.
>>
>>378433091
>Find me a way to make GPU ops to branch properly first.

Branching is expensive everywhere. On both CPU and GPU, predication is far faster unless you save lots of fetching or numerous instructions. When branching goes awry on CPU, you get repeated pipeline flushes. On GPU, branch divergence. Either way you pay a steep cost. There's no interesting comparison in branch-ability.

Happily, heavy reliance on branching usually comes from shoddy instruction on programming, rather than actual need.

Why post about such a boring niche on a video game board? The GPU can trounce the CPU in graphics (obviously), physics, AI, sound, game logic. Everything that goes into a game or simulation. The only thing holding back the GPU right now is that (on PC) memory transfers between GPU and CPU are very expensive.

Hell, let's list it out. People for whom the GPU's capabilities are more compelling:
>scientists
>mathematicians
>game developers
>simulation developers (that's me)

People for whom the CPU wins out:
