>open world gimmick started in early 00's

when will it end bros?

It will never end. It will just become less prominent as other types of games come back because people got sick of it.
Never. Open world is far easier on design and production than making good levels
>make an Xbox Hueg map with vast empty spaces
>sprinkle skinner boxes everywhere, design your plot progression around backtracking and going from the same 20 locations back and forth
>advertise it as DUDE LIVING WORLD YOU CAN DO ANYTHING SEE THAT MOUNTAIN?

lol this
There's nothing inherently wrong with open world games the problem more lies in (western) developer's sheepish following of trends and poor QA

Open world games work but people like the jews at Bethesda are ruining them, because they want to have an open world as a gimmick but also want to have a tight story driven campaign, so they give you a big house full of rooms but they lock all the doors so you have to take a specific path to get to the kitchen where all the delicious content is.

Except every open world game has the same flaws
-World is empty and barren, nothing but greenfields/deserts with enemies standing awkwardly near "camps"
-Level design is non-existent
-Combat is too easy
-Yet game becomes even much more easier as you progress
-No bosses or memorable enemies
-MMO-like quests
-Almost no unique loot, everything is replaced by randomly generated shit
There are very few examples of open-world games done right

Roguelikes like ADOM is open world done right
