When people get into composing, they typically go one of two paths:

It takes a pretty long time to animate an 50 minute episode, especially with a production quality worthy of a mainline Gundam OVA. Animators are still payed by the frame last I checked. Money doesn't affect the animation quality as directly as you'd think, but time absolutely does. Taking more time to make the thing doesn't rack up as many costs because most of the time goes into animation quality.
