It looks like shit in motion though. The supers and other cutscene-type stuff look great but that's it.

I dunno I think this style is very hard to do. Gameplay is one thing but if you've ever played story it honestly looks like shit outside of the models.

It's not the engine, they use UE3 (I think)

They literally do each shadow and shading individually for each character per each frame.
That's why there are no extra costumes and only re-colours

dumbasses, GG Xrd uses unreal engine 3.

they use fancy modeling and lighting tricks to achieve the art style they use. it takes a lot of work and planning not only for characters but for level design as well. making an rpg based on guilty gears graphics would be time consuming and expensive to the point where you have to make cutbacks on stuff like content amount or voice acting.

this just got announced. it uses similar techniques but not as polished simply because it has much more going on than a fighting game with only two models on the screen.

The Naruto Storm games come pretty close, but of course not as close a fighting game where all the effort went into making the characters look good. There's like a 1+ hour video about how they made it
