Personally I've been trying to find a mmo recently that makes me feel rewarded for the time i spent playing it, which has been harder and harder to find recently.

Leveling is a breeze now, and swordsman does more DPS than other classes.

On most maps, biggest thing is there isn't a separate respawns timer for the map and the mobs now.

If you used to play ToS and look for comeback then you have to atleast boot the game today or tomorrow.
Right now there is an event for reset stats skills and classes for free alongside returning player bonus and a free dlc with lots of cash shop goodies going off of sale next week

ESO, nothing else is worth spending money on these days. We are in the dark ages of MMORPGs. Waiting for Crowfall, Pantheon, and Age of Camelot. Really just hoping at least one of those ends up coming out and being good.

What game should I play if I want to get back into MMOs, but play very seriously. That doesn't mean just competitive stats (arena rating, kill count, wealth and so on), but doing things regular player doesn't normally do and gaining huge profit in the process. Includes instance selling, trade schemes, small scale pvp (you won't believe me, but it's discouraged in some games), mercenary work, politics, clan warfare, espionage.
I'm already eying EVE Online, because it has all those things and more, but it seems pretty dead right now. Do you have other suggestions?

Any okay/playable mmos on the market that doesn't have the usual grind quests to end game then raid type formula or that is focused more on action combat?
Those have been my favorites so far, Firefall, Warframe, that kind of shit. Mind you they were grindy as fuck but they were still fairly enjoyable games, I especially liked how in Firefall you could just run around the map and do activities and shit as they popped up, it felt very liberating. The "WoW-formula" never really caught my eye unfortunately.

This was a HUGE turn off when I first started playing the game, and even though people kept saying "each class has 3 different specializations that play very differently" the game felt stale and too similar pretty quickly.

Nowadays I don't think it even makes any difference anymore, since there are like one or two classes in the entire game that actually play slightly differently: melee and ranged.

The game is 100% dead, and there are no hopes it will be good ever again.

Ultima, Runescape, WoW, Ragnarok, etc. any mmo that had a cherished time went to complete shit, they all suffered the same fate and nothing came anew to replace their glory-- all that is left is either their rotting corpses trucking along still or they're dead. I feel bad for anyone that didn't get to experience any of it. I always make fun of my one friend for always joining in on mmo's late into their lifespans after they already started to die without getting to experience what made me and our friends get so addicted in the first place ( he joins wow during cata, runescape after 07, etc)

On green man gaming it seems to be 40 bucks for the bundle with both ARR and HW. Though you should just get ARR and then preoder stormblood, that'll be 60 dollars, 20 for A realm reborn and 40 for stormblood which includes the previous expansion. Eh, I don't look for something that I can force myself to like under the right conditions. Let alone with a monthly fee involved.
XIV not only did storyline wrong (Getting to the expansion was possibly the most mind-numbingly horrible thing I've had to do in an MMORPG for the past decade, and I got to level 60 in BDO before exp patches.), the idea of having to grind the exact same dungeons, exact same daily beastman quests and exact same areas every time you want to level a class with no means of proper diversification is no-joke torture.
There's absolutely nothing fun to it at all beyond at some point hopefully doing the high tier raids, which are just a hellhole of drama.

Too much suspension of disbelief in order to enjoy something that in my book is simply not properly done. Others are welcome to it, but I don't have the stamina to pretend anymore.

Pretty much. You can easily even purchase the monthly fee token in game once you are high level enough.
As an example it costs 2.5 million silver to get a month token.
I made 1.5 million today while questing.

Currently addicted to Revelation Online. In spite of it being a literal bug fest and poorly localized, the core features are fun and interesting, and it has a comfy atmosphere. Great soundtrack too.

My most played mmorpg is easily Final Fantasy XIV, as it was also the first mmorpg I ever played. Though I have been away from the game for about a month or so in order to hype up Stormblood (and play Revelation).

Tera is another mmorpg I've played ALOT. It has a great aesthethic, combat and overall world design, but I'll never understand the developer's policy on content. As in, content like dungeons and gameplay features are actively removed every big patch instead of being added.

I tried Blade and Soul but aside from the character creator I just couldn't get into it. Meh.

Might try out Elder Scrolls Online since I've heard it's actually playable now and I like the lore surrounding Tamirel too.

Looking forward to Bless Online but only for the delicious Panthera/Lupus races.

For those who do not know, there is no auto loot in the game (and the game REVOLVES around grinding and looting), and the ONLY way to auto loot is to have pets. Which you can only get from the cash shop, and you will NEVER see one on the in-game market place, and if you do, it will be instantly sniped by market place bots and you will -NEVER- get it.

Pets are so important that they are basically required to get anything done and farm at any decent pace at high level. Without them you farm at maybe a 1/10th of the efficiency, and make absolutely no fucking money

MMOs cost no more to make than any other game, and cost fucking pennies to keep online. Server costs have not been an actual concern since the early 2000's.

Game treats you as if you've never seen or heard of a video game in your life until about level 30. Then it's just outright miserable from that point until the 50's. Many years ago it had a 80$ cosmetic item at sale if I remember correctly. Right after that players rebelled and gathered in hundreds in protest after which CCP removed it.

Eve is definitely not P2W. Microtransections are for cosmetic things like ship skins which can all be bought with in game money too.

You can buy PLEX and sell it in game to get in game money. Getting in game money won't make you "win" in Eve tho because no matter how shiny and expensive the ship you are flying, it can easily be destroyed by the cheapest ship piloted by a guy who knows what he is doing. If anything, flying something expensive without having the experience and skill (by which I mean the experience and skill to actually fly the ship, not in game numbers) means that you will turn into an expensive pinata waiting to be blown open by every dude who can run a directional scan.

I'm not super creative but it's leaning dark/weird fantasy with a bunch of weird classes/races.

I got back into FFXI for its 15th anniversary. It's not really the same as it was back in the day, but I've been having a pretty decent time with it.

Having played as many MMOs as I have, I feel like for the most part they are all just the same shit. Go back and play what you are nostalgic for if it is still open, or just play pretty much any free to play MMO. In like a month or so you'll remember exactly why you stopped playing in the first place. Unless you have friends playing a specific one, no MMO really has anything worthwhile to offer compared to any other these days.

If a noob is piloting that battleship, an experienced player with a Taranis can tear it apart.

Ok let's say it can't, by which I mean it can't break the tank of a battleship. Then it can easily run away which means that battleship guy is not "winning" anything. But most importantly it can tackle and wait for his friends to arrive (which is what usually happens in low and null sec) and again battleship guy is not winning anything.

Anyway all that is beyond my point. Battleships are not expensive by any means unless it's your first week in the game. T2 battleships are not upgraded strnger versions of t1, contrary they are specilized versions only fit for certain jobs. It leads to my main point which is that just having money in Eve does nothing for you.

Realistically speaking best you can do (combat wise) with money is to buy expensive modules and turn into an expensive pinata waiting to be gangraped by a fleet of 10 because literally no one plays fair in Eve.

Indeed the cheapest ship destroying an expensive ship is a bit exaggeration which might still hold true if the expensive ship is piloted by a noob and the cheap one is piloted by a vet. It's basically an expression to point out that getting in game money through selling PLEX will not make you win the game without going ino much detail.

Expensive stuff will only matter in the hands of veterans, and they don't need to spend real money to get isk.

Joking aside that's the excuse people will give you because it's true. If you're Dragoon you'll literally be pressing 2 buttons from 8-26. Thrusting Strike then Impulse Drive 4 times then repeat. FFXIV is a shit game but the weakest point is EASILY the leveling process. The second thing is that if you want to focus on leveling to hit the newest expansion you can't. I hope you enjoy doing 100 fetch quests at level 50 so by the time you reach the next expansion you're already level 52 or you can give SE $25 so you can skip all that :^))))

Well I'll make friends in dungeons, but we never keep in touch. I know it's farfetched, I find it strange myself, but I feel like every FC with the aspects I am interested in are only looking for hard chargers who cleared ARR and HW, not some newb who is still mastering basic MMO skills.

BDO is on sale with a free trial thing so I might give that a shot if I feel like downloading 52GB+. Gender locked classes is pretty stupid but I got over it for Vindictus and some of the classes look fun. Not sure I can stomach the korean aspects though.

I'm not talking about the general importance of isk in the game, my main point is that the average Joe will not log in, buy PLEX and start desroying stuff. How can you not get that?

They hyped up the character creator big time but it's really nothing to write home about. A lot of hair colors just glow neon in the dark.The combat is really boring and non-combat stuff is out of this world tedious. Plus if you want anything you need to pay real cash money.

BDO is pretty close to what you're looking for but the devs neutered the market. The gameplay is extremely open to doing all kinds of things for money besides just killing shit, but the way the market works you basically make jack shit for money doing anything other than monster killing. There's a ton to learn and experiment with in the crafts, but it's just not that profitable.

I quit playing a while ago but yeah, that was my experience. The fixed prices on produced goods in the market are so low you could match a few day's worth of craft working with just a few hours of monster grinding. You might make a good bit in crafts but it's shit in comparison.

Also craft working requires you to be pretty dedicated to the game to be as efficient as possible, as they're usually time-based (wait 6 hours for workers to do their shit, then you have to manually send them back out). The whole AFK thing is kindof nice but it actually requires you to be more dedicated to the game than just grinding, which you can do on your own time.

One thing that got me about gw2 is that I went back to it after taking a few month break because there wasn't much to do anymore, and due to the fact all the shit they released was living story stuff I still had nothing to do when I came back like 4 months later.

I am still playing Guild Wars 2 because nothing else feels right mechanically after that game. I just can't subject myself to rng deciding if I blocked or dodged something when I can just use an actual block skill or move out of the way. It's the only true skill based MMO.

I really wanted EQN to be an actual thing, but it was clear from the onset that is was just some other random game they were working on/had assets for and just shoved EQ into the namesake for it. Then coupled with the SOE thing, it was doomed from the start. It's really sad to see a day with EQ not at Sony and the franchise in general being in the shitter.

Only movement impairing crowd control doesn't work on bosses, you can still poison them etc you just can't stun them to death. Bosses are also a really small part of the game, every end game Earth Tower party contains one or more characters whose sole job is to reduce their party members' cooldowns and group enemies into one place either by freezing or linking them together so they share damage.
