On sale right now in the Humble Store for its deepest discount ever. Is the DLC worth it?

Also, general Alien thread.
>>
Game is totally worth it, one of the most immersive experiences I've had in a video game in a long time. Scariest I've played as well. DLC is okay, really short.

Worth it at full price, so don´t even think about it and buy it.

Medical is actually pretty easy after the first playthrough because they don't randomize where you need to go. It's always the same examination room to find the keycard, so you can go directly to where you need to be, without a lot of unnecessary wandering about.

Emergency override locks on the doors and the double-desk hidey hole by the second save point are your best friends in the world.

It ran on my 760 fine. I think that card came out a year or two before the game.

Honestly, the game isn't technically all that amazing apart for the lighting and use of PBR. As far as everything else goes, like geometry complexity, it's pretty average. Animation I'd say is just plain bad.

this
this is where I learnt the alien AI. I played it in xmas 2015 and dropped it at the medbay.
Got back into it in oct 16 and loved every minute of it.
My issue was that I kept sprinting. dont run at all. I was sprinting when the xeno was not close and he just comes for you and reks you.
You basically cannot sprint at all in that game, only when you are 100% sure the xeno is nowhere near, and he is always near
>>

wasn't it in the $1 tier in a bundle a couple of years ago?
>>
>>378327712
Is that Alan or whatever the name was?

>>
>>378323217

Yeah it's a great game, pretty long too. Make sure you play it on hard (anything below that is way too easy and the nightmare mode above it is bullshit and removes features).

The dlc is okay, extremely short though, but nice if you liked the first film.

However the dlc "crew expendable" is bugged and there's a very, very, very large chance the final encounter wont trigger so you wont be able to finish it, so you'll have to watch youtube for the ending

>>378327712
remind me again why did the ship blow up?
>>
It's worth it, but the game goes to shit for awhile about 2/3 of the way through where there's no alien for awhile. Gets better after that though. The game also has dead space syndrome where every ducking objective is "go here and fix thing" then "it's fixed good job, oh shit wait now the shitter's clogged better get down to medical" gets really grating since the game is so long.
>>
>>378328560
>remind me again why did the ship blow up?
she shot a fuel tank or something
>>
>>378328560
>remind me again why did the ship blow up?
Every time we saw inside the "lander" before it blew up we kept getting glimpses of these big yellow/red tanks near the door. Everyone should know if you shoot a yellow/red painted tank it's going to blow up in a big fireball.

In other news anyone got a good link to all the alien, avp comics?
>>
>>378328693
>there's no alien for awhile
I liked that part desu
It's a nice breather and lets you try stuff out you normally wouldn't bother with cos it could attract the alien
>>
>>378328946
Yeah but the androids are so easy to deal with until they artificially make them hard again by giving them more health and immunity to electricity.
>>
>>378326230
Scott is a hack that got lucky on the Alien script. You can see in his other films too. Gladiator is carried by the two leads and by the set pieces. Look how he is the only single person involved with blade runner (including Phillip K Dick) that thinks Deckart is a replicant when it makes the story much worse.
>>
>>378328117
>and he is always near

He's not ALWAYS near. If you can't hear him stomping around on the floor or making a racket in the vents then he's not around. And then there's the motion tracker alarm that goes off every time he turns up too. Frankly, the alien makes way too much fucking noise for what is supposed to be an ambush creature, he's never going to surprise you.

And I'm shocked you didn't know running makes noise and noise attracts the alien. Even if you weren't already aware of this basic stealth game fundamental the game tells you it on every other load screen tip.
>>
>>378329089
You can cause the Alien to begin patrolling in areas simply by making loads of noise. There are a number of triggers that can cause this.

I wonder if they ever patched in PC mic attraction vector like on the kinect
>>

Install Unpredicable AI mod.
http://www.moddb.com/mods/unpredictable-alien-mod

It prevents the Alien from being so... predictable...
>>
>>378329058

Ridley Scott is not entirely a hack, he's just no good at salvaging a bad script. Very few directors are.

You are right about Blade Runner, though. This seems to be the one film where he's decided he's going to not just get involved with the writing, he's going to command it, and he's made the film all the worse for it. Making Deckard a replicant essentially undermines the entire point of the story.

>>
>>378330250

>>

I dunno about that but it was going to be set on a giant monastery space station where aside from the station itself the monks basically lived a medieval existence and thought the alien was basically a demon

Someone I know said that even Scott didn't get why people liked Alien and I honestly agree. I don't think he even bothered to go back and watch the film before making Covenant.

>>378330486
The original idea was based around a monastery planet with monks that looked at the Alien in a more religious perspective, like it was a demon.
>>
Some have crashing issues with this game?

I usually crash when loading a save from dying.
>>
I read somewhere (on /co/ I think) that the Aliens have some kind of telepathic ability that makes humans underestimate them and think they can be controlled. Basically an explanation on why every fucking WY scientist and big shot go full fucking retard whenever Aliens enter the picture. Anyone else heard about something like that, or am I just making things up?
>>
>>378331308
Its probably the amount of money they threw at him. The shoestring budget helps make Alien a good film.

>No.

"The purpose of this story as I saw it was that in his job of hunting and killing these replicants, Deckard becomes progressively dehumanized. At the same time, the replicants are being perceived as becoming more human. Finally, Deckard must question what he is doing, and really what is the essential difference between him and them? And, to take it one step further, who is he if there is no real difference?"

-Philip K. Dick, author of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
>>
>>378329089
>And I'm shocked you didn't know running makes noise and noise attracts the alien
well how am I supposed to know that he is in a different section to me but tapping sprint brings him to me, wthout playing the game by trial and error.
It's not like other stealth games, where enemies can only hear you if you are sprinting close to them. If the xeno is active in the segment of the game you are in, sprinting at all will make it zone in on you even if he is not if your area.
>>
>>378331286
They were pretty good, though if you're prepared going in it's easy. Just prep the area around the airlock with pipe bombs before you hit the button which triggers the alien to head right for you.

>>
>>378323217
It's great - I remember buying it November 2015, playing it for about 2 hours and not really feeling it, but then around Christmas I decided to give it another chance but on Nightmare difficulty, lowest brightness settings, plus headphones, and it was probably one of most immersive experiences I've had with a game - great fun but holy shit was I stressed out for most of it.
>>
>>378331417
Never heard of anything like that. The only telepathic thing I've heard about them is a link to the Queen.

Sounds stupid, though. Like the other anon said, seems to much like a poor excuse to write shitty characters.

It registered me as found when it went passed me but delayed the attack pattern but it turned out slightly strange since it made him clip through the side this time.
I've had him stare at me and taken the air duct and jumped down on me from behind a few times.
One thing the ayy has done that almost scared the shit out of me was when he slowly cleared a room, entered the other room, and slowly went his way into the third room, as I was about to exit the locker, he decided to turn around and run towards the room I was in just because it felt like using another air duct to flee in.

TL;DR it's truly unpredictable.

I say give Blomkamp the directors chair and put Scott on as producer to offer his vision. Because Scott's vision is incredible, he knows how to shoot a scene, he just doesn't understand characters.

And Elysium's message was horrible considering its theme. The upper class leaves the planet and the idiot plebs stay to continue to overpopulate the Earth. Solution? Let's steal the technology of the upper class to get free healthcare to everyone, so that the problem gets worse and spirals out of control. If a population can't sustain themselves, enough of them needs to die so the population becomes sustainable. There are no starving nations. There are just places where a certain number of people can't survive.

I 100% agree it just looks like fanfic which is pretty obnoxious considering how strikingly original Blade Runner is. A loving recreation is not the way to pay tribute to originality.

I know Alien Covenant rubbed a lot of fans the wrong way but I bet the opening scene and the David / Walter flute scene are a better Blade Runner sequel than anything we'll see in Blade Runner 2.

Predators should have had a group of tradition-breaking female yautja who got bored of politics and decided to go hunting like the males do. There was no reason to have these "super predators" because there already is a bigger and stronger predator. They just don't go out that much.

There were actually some ideas for having females in Predators.
I'm glad they didn't do it, though. They would've made the females smaller and more agile instead of bigger and dominating.

But yeah, the Super Predators were completely redundant. Had they been normal, the "prisoner" could just have been from an enemy clan and the plot would've been exactly the same.
Such a needless concept.

Why would anyone break lore like that? That's like making the xenomorph queen smaller than regular xenos. Female yautja are bigger and in charge. Male yautja are smaller and fight their battles.
>>
>>378349587
Yes and no. If ammo was more rare, like maybe 500 fuel in the entire game, it would have been less of a crutch. Using the flamethrower instead of the flashlight for lighting added a ton of atmosphere to game though.

Considering how badly movie directors have shat on lore in other franchises, I'm not really surprised with this.
Also, female predators are a barely-touched subject outside of fan-works. Movie folks would probably think they could get away with implementing their personal ideas.

But yeah, I agree that this kind of breaking would fucking suck. I like the idea that instead of being smaller and weaker, their females are actually bigger and rule the political side of their society.

To that end I would like to say actual unpredictability is not always the best way to go about these sorts of things.

It is an animal, after all. Intelligent and deadly, but still following basic instincts: hunt, feed, breed, hide. TRUE unpredictablity makes it clear it's a video game. If the Ayy comes down from a vent in one room, walks around the room once, then shrieks as it ascends up the way it came, I don't want to see it drop down AGAIN from that same spot before I've even left my locker.

Civilian grade weaponry is ineffective against them. Military grade and armor piercing rips them apart. Most people don't have such weaponry, however.

Also, they tend to nest relatively near to their prey, so nuking would also wipe out any people around. Xenos also have a remarkable ability to avoid being completely wiped out by any large-scale extermination effort.

The Novel of Alien Covenant clears the plot holes that plaged the movie

No helmets
>We find out why they run around the planet without helmets; Walter leaves the ship first to test the air and water, revealing that it's free from pathogens and pollutants "right down past the molecular level." Ledward actually remembers this when he sees the spores for the first time, reasoning that they cannot be dangerous because Walt gave them the all clear. Also the spores shoot the eggs into his ear through some kind of proboscis, they do not just zip into his ear as in the film.

>David later tells the crew that because the virus is inert until it senses life, it is impossible to detect even with the most advanced scanning equipment.

Xeno eggs weren't created by David
>David shows Oram a petrified facehugger's egg, which he reveals he euthanised because it was too aggressive. Oram looks inside this egg, at David's urging, and is comforted to find that the hugger inside is, as promised, quite dead. Tantalisingly, he mentions that this was left behind by the Engineers, saying it is a "supreme example of their skill." His attempts to create the alien, seemingly, are trying to emulate this one left by the Engineers. He also confirms that the aliens take on characteristics of their host species.

The stupid facehugger "trust me bro" scene
>David shows Oram his own attempts at creating the eggs. Before descending into the egg chamber, he gives Oram some kind of smelly unguent to smear underneath his nose which he says will keep him safe from the hugger's attentions, and even leans over one of the open ovoids to prove that doing so is safe.

About the Enginners
>The flashback with Shaw and David nuking Engineers is entirely absent. Also, there is nothing to suggest this is anyting other than the Engineer homeworld - the characters refer to it as such multiple times.

CONT
>>
>suspect alien will pop up
>hide in locker
>lo and behold it shows up seconds later
>immediately walks to the locker, rips it open, and bites my face

About David
>Daniels stabs David through the eye with the nail, not the chin - we discover David shares Walter's healing capabilities here, as his damaged eye knits itself back together. This whole switch is not nearly as telegraphed as it was in the film - no mention of David reaching for the knife, for example.

>Unlike the film, David does not reveal himself to the crew, posing as Walter to the very end - Daniels goes under believing that all is right with world, little suspecting she is about to become a petri dish for the universe's most deranged synthetic. David then opens a secure line with Weyland Yutani HQ back on earth and slips his embryos into storage - these are simply hidden on the ship

David Shop
>The biggest change is the scene with David and Oram in his little shop of horrors. It is filled with all manner of fascinating and gruesome sights, including a dissected Engineer's corpse, tiny preserved neomorph specimens that hatched out of insects, and, most notably, corpses (or at least models) of something that sounds suspiciously like the classic Giger alien.

Misc stuff
>The sequence of events up until the attack in the wheatfield are more or less exactly as they are in the film - however, we do find out that Hallet, despite warnings from Lope not to, investigates the ovoid because he doesn't want the science types to take all the credit for its discovery. In fact, the book takes much greater pains than the film to justify the crew's actions, often talking about safeguards and correct operating procedure.

Xeno meets Neo
>As the survivors escape the necropolis, the surviving neomorph joins the party and does battle with the xeno.
>>

>The soldiers get massacred and barely manage to escape. If anything Aliens makes them more effective by showing how their acid blood and general stealth makes them a match for a well equipped modern military.
Only because they can't shoot back lest they set off the terraformer.
When they can fight back in the second act, just 3 marines and ripley massacare a fuckton of aliens despite the xenomorphs having the element of suprise and Ripley and co. having to protect newt.
3 marines, ripley and a fucking child take out a good portion of the xenos sent to kill them. Aliens does nothing but shit on the xenomorph.
>>
>>378367387
Wait, which one is bane?
>>
>>378365163
Literally one marine makes it out. And he's heavily injured. Aliens, like Predator, showedthat bravado and guns are not the way to win. But you grew up toolate to understand that. It was a very 80s thought because of the rise of action movies and violence glorification.

See also: Die Hard. Which is why the later movies were total shit to fans.

For all the shooting that goes on during the Hive scene, there are really only about 4 aliens that are confirmed killed onscreen. Vasquez and Drake are shooting a lot, but it's not confirmed that they're taking one down with every burst.

Later on, the survivors are dug in, and in Ripley's own words, the aliens can only come at them through a narrow corridor, where they are fodder for the remote sentries. Even when they finally corner the group in Operations, the aliens still largely have to approach from one direction. Again, though, actual confirmed onscreen kills are few. They combined Ripley's knowledge with Newt's information on the alien behavior, with a good defensive position.

Also, Aliens' xenos are warrior caste, which are somewhat more prone to zerg rushing rather than guerrilla strikes like the drone from Alien. Warriors have pressurized acid blood which they use to their advantage by getting in real close so that even in death they cause chaos among their prey.
>>
>>378365226
That still doesn't seem how it's supposed to work. It sounds like a neat mechanic, but when the alien knows you've entered a locker, but doesn't know you've hidden under a desk, which are fundamentally not that dissimilar, it's kind of a shit system
>>
>>378367708

>>378367708
The only reason the marines didn't massacare the xenomorph hive, given how much damage they do to it later on, was because they were gimped with almost no guns in their first encounter.
>Aliens, like Predator, showedthat bravado and guns are not the way to win.
That's definitely true for Preadator, but no, that is a laughable claim about aliens. At no point are the marines or ripley forced to out think the aliens like Dutch is in Preadator.
Instead we get
>when you can't fire your guns lest you set off a nuke, the ayys win.
>but you spend your time planning out how to defend yourself and barricading yourself in, but the xenomorphs still get in?
>it's fine, just shoot them and escape, you kill tons even when one guy is purposely trying to sabotage the mission, one guy has a concussion and your reduced to limited ammo and supplies
>oh, and the queen and her royal gaurd?
>just use a flamethrower to threaten them and they'll leave you alone
>and the queen is easy to beat, just punch her to death with a powerloader and jettison her into space

Yep, totally shows how guns aren't useful solving problems. I guess the powerloader and flamethrower aren't technically guns, so your partially right.

By the way, it's not like I hate aliens or anything, so don't think that. It's an enjoyable flick. It's just not a good successor to the original Alien.
>>
>>378323217
I ruined this game by using an exploit that allowed me to run without getting heard. Shit was funny when I'd just run by the alien unnoticed.
>>
>>378368404
Just searched how many xenos are killed in aliens, and no, it's a fuck ton, not just a few.
Some autist on reddit watched over and over and made this:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/1/d/13IKpsRgfLJ4bRJ-TEanAckUWBZcKKyzfHH6KTkwUIZc/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true
The xenomorphs are most definitely displayed as expendable chaff in aliens, which goes against their entire characterization in Alien
>>
>>378367997
>resurrection
Don't ever mention that crap. Ever.
And fuck you for reminding me that pile of shit exists
>>
>>378367578
They do shoot back during the hive scene and the officer gets angry at them for it.

I don't think that Aliens really hurts the alien. Despite everything they don't really kill that many and they're mostly holding incredibly defensible positions and still get forced back. Short of making the Alien ridiculously bulletproof I don't think theres much more they could have done to the Alien in Aliens to make it more scary. Half of the time when they do kill one its blood ends up effectively killing someone anyway and having them use tactics shows them to be more intelligent.
>>
>>378367997
The military is portrayed as incompetent. Like the soldier that tags along with the mercs is outright childish, easily fascinated, and knows jackshit about guns beside his own.

The whole movie had a rather silly vibe, though. The fetishist scientist, the edgy, insecure commander, the dinner conversation that revealed WY had been bought out by Walmart.
>>
>>378368417
The alien can hear any noise you make, including opening and closing a locker. If the alien hears this, it knows you're hiding.
If you go under a desk it makes no noise, and the alien has no idea if you're hiding in the area or just slipped away somewhere, so it's search isn't as narrowed
>>
>>378368960
That chart is bollocks, the sentry gun scene doesn't have remotely enough detail to show 50 dead, its just small chunks of grainy footage blocked by muzzle flash and if that many died the entire area would have dissolved. If he makes shit up like that how can you trust the rest of what he's spouting.
>>
>>378369170
>Short of making the Alien ridiculously bulletproof I don't think theres much more they could have done to the Alien in Aliens to make it more scary. Half of the time when they do kill one its blood ends up effectively killing someone anyway and having them use tactics shows them to be more intelligent.
But that's the issue. They could have and should have made another terror film like Alien. Something like a movie version of Alien Isolation would be great: it would preserve the terror of the original while having a plot line that isn't a copy of the first film.
Instead we got an action flick. A well done and enjoyable action flick, but not one that's a proper sequel.

No they don't. Hicks manages to find out they're coming just in time from the vents, and literally every single Marine except Hicks dies in the third act.

They don't do well against the aliens at all. They get their asses kicked from the minute they land to the minute Bishop flies them off after rigging the reactor.

One marine survives and barely so, he's essentially crippled and half blind. The marines never manage more than barely escaping. They don't hold out against anything.

I played it on the most difficult setting and ammo was so rare that I only used it a hand full of times.

Question for anyone else playing on the most difficult setting, did you tally your deaths? Mine was 150 by the end. The med bay gave me the most trouble I think.

I watched markiplier's playthrough. If anything, I learned more what NOT to do from watching him, the most significant thing being don't hose the walls with your flamer. It's like the lockers, something to use only in an absolute emergency. It's actually more useful to keep the alien at bay with a pointed flamethrower while you back your way through the level than to actually flame it and have it come back down right on top of you 3 seconds later

Some places say hard is best for people playing it the first time if you want to enjoy the horrific atmosphere while being challenged.

Some say Nightmare mode is the way to go for the best experience.
Im just afraid that nightmare mode will feel tedious, that's my only fear.

AvP was only ever supposed to be a "wouldn't it be cool if..." scenario.

How big is the Xeno's cone of awareness in this game? What are the do's and dont's for avoiding the Xeno?
>>
>>378397716
The alien literally has wallhacks and will find you if you stay still. The trick is to run whenever the alien is around so it gets confused for a bit.

>The alien can hear any noise you make, including opening and closing a locker
As much as this would make sense, it actually cannot hear you enter a locker and/or cabinet. None of the AI can (humans, synthetics, or the alien).
I assume it's for gameplay balance.
>>
>>378398485
>AI doesn't notice that obnoxious hinge noise and fucking slam
I refuse to believe it, especially considering since medbay I haven't successfully hidden in a locker without being killed in under a minute
>>
>>378391932
Only if it's the "Complete Edition"
>>
>>378398732
>he fell for the hiding in lockers meme
its all about hiding under tables. the alien always finds you in lockers.
>>
>>378398732
It triggers my autism too, but it's true.

The things it can hear are you walking (if you're rather close), sprinting, noisemakers, any gunshot, flamethrower igniting, throwables exploding, the alarms/speaker systems from re-wire stations, and I think flares hitting the ground after being thrown.
What it cannot hear is the opening/closing of lockers/cabinets, the loud ass thud of the vent cover after cutting it open (same for the smaller, less loud door ones), the opening and closing of regular doors and vents, scripted alarm sequences, and humans/synthetics talking to themselves.
>>
>>378399525
I knew I'd forget some things.

It can hear you hit the walls with your maintenance jack.
It cannot hear you open up and remove the door braces.

This. Online MP is still available through Tuungie or GameRanger.

If the flood can infect Xenos, the flood. If not, Xenos.

There was at least one posted in the AvP game thread yesterday, search the archive. You're better off just playing Alien Trilogy though.
>>
Any tips and tricks on how/when to use your inventory items? I've been hoarding all of them out of fear that the alien will adapt but I can't even get away with hacking the first door in the medbay with the alien patrolling.
>>
>>378399918
Also does holding an inventory item that emits light of any kind make you more visible? Of course the flamethrower and flares do, but what about the others?

is this game an actual game or just cutscene walking simulator with jump spooks
>>

It seems like it's trying to communicate.
>>
>>378400563
It's an actual game but the praise it's receiving in this thread is tremendously overstated, the game is repetitive and bland as fuck after a few hours.
>>
if i play the game on medium will it affect the game too much?
>>
>>378402492
On Medium the alien is the most 'realistic' I'd say. She will hear your motion sensor if she is just above you or in front of you. She won't camp a save point for the fun of it, but she can be really persistent if you make some noise in a room. E.g if you kill a synthetic she will run back and forth into that room for a while until she goes on a longer stroll. She'll be pretty quick jumping on your ass when you're doing objectives as well (starting engines, torching panels).
On Hard she's, I'd say, very much a dumb kid playing CoD with cheats. She might run into your room and patrol for a while before going out even if you didn't make any sound at all. She will at 90% of times find you in lockers if you made ny sound in that room. But at the same time you can for example walk normally if you see that she's over you, sometimes she'll just follow you up in the vents and not jump down. Also on objectives, like the only way to complete them is to hit a wall, wait for her, apply fire to her face, then quickly make that loud task and move to another room as she'll be back in a sec.

no jumpscares except maybe in cutscenes, I don't quite remember.

The atmosphere is super good though

Damn shame that the game didn't end with this section https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSZPxHppXBE. Finally unloading on an alien after an entire game of it's relentless harassment, and saving flamethrower fuel was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've had in recent memory. Then they dragged out the game for another hour, and ended on a huge downer.

>no Predator Isolation game which lets you fight in a jungle Arnie style

Seems like it has the problem of the similar assari theory from mass effect. How does one telepathically communicate across galaxies, and cases where people just see still images? Why would Wayland Yutani executives on a distant planet be affected?

This game is excellent, my only complaint is how the devs tried to extend the life of the game with cheap tricks near the end.

>reach one closed are near the end of the game, alien is following you like a dog chasing beacon, never goes while you try to unlock the elevator
>play merry hide and seek with the alien until you find the ID card on the other side of the complex
>sneak all the way back
>elevator unlocks, but there is no power
>okay, lets play hide and seek again with the nice alien
>sneak all the way back to the generator
>turn it on, alien comes back angry as fuck because of the noise
>sneak all the way back to the elevator, almost no flamethrower ammo and only four bullets, no medkits and I am playing on hard
>press the button to call the elevator
>everything goes dark because the generator failed, you need to go back in the dark to fix it, and the alien is coming frothing at the mouth in mindless anger, you can hear him screaming in rage

Holy shit fuck this, worst part of the game, I dont even remember if it was a elevator or one of these doors you need to raise like a garage door, damn thing almost made me quit the game
