What are some poorly received/unhyped games from last gen that are low budget and obviously flawed but with charm and personality? This is like my favorite game on PS3 and after playing all the big buzzed games on the system I realize this is the direction I need to go.

It took almost 4 years for an English localization. The game didn't take off in the west especially considering it released in 2015 when most people moved onto the PS4.

Midway was the developer too.

IIRC despite the game being solid, it didn't sell too great, and they went way, WAY overbudget. They had no chance of making the money back, and the game hit bargain bins in record time because of it.

It feels like there's no argument at all when you consider Kutaro didn't even speak. Pikarina was pretty clearly the biggest character in the game at least from a writing standpoint, even though Kutaro was the MC.

And now that I think about it, she could be controlled by a player 2, couldn't she?

Earlier than last gen, but Advent Rising. It had lag issues on occasion, and there were complaints about the aiming system, but neither of those things were really an issue to me.

It gave you a great sense of power without it being too easy, story was an interesting take on human potential, and the soundtrack is probably the best video game music I've ever heard.

>dont have one of those memory card things

Just make one, there're tutorials all over the place. All you need is 007 Agent Under Fire (can get that well cheap), blank dvds (can get them well cheap) and some programs that'll you probably find links to with your tutorial (they're free). Well, and a memory card but I assume you've got at least 1 or 2

Emulating is all well and good by the way but
1. Some things emulate like shite, look at how Ace Combat games were a little while back. 5 and the one after are fine now but even now, 4 has glitches that detract from the experience
2. Some things just don't emulate at all, Savage Skies for example isn't a stellar game, but if you want to get past the briefing screen you need to play it on the actual console

Can't go wrong with a softmodded ps2 backup

Let It Die. People don't really seem to care about the game much, but I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Frustrating and satisfying at the same time.

A fine TPS with some charm, though really buggy and wonky (like most tps games from Japan).

The real heartbreak is reading about the original concept. I feel really bad for Suda and Mikami. They basically hate what that game had become. Literally all EA's fault too, btw.

I actually enjoyed Killer Is Dead's core gameplay a lot. Especially compared to games like No More Heroes, combat felt so quick and smooth. It was the structure of the campaign that heavily damaged a lot of people's experience.

>1st stage is nothing
>2nd stage is a short tutorial
>3rd stage is tiny and feels poorly structured
>2 other stages that force you to walk through a dream sequence

Still, the story was kind of neat (and felt slightly more akin to his older work like FSR and Killer7) and it shows the devs learned a lot about how to design a hack-n-slash. I wouldn't be surprised if NMH3 plays more like this.

And it absolutely is. Extremely grindy.

Took a couple months off to focus on school, but besides that I've been playing a lot since December. Almost at the top floor, but still have a ways to go. That's the thing, it does get really monotonous and the drop rates of certain items needed to make better weapons is just annoying.

But I'm familiar with Monster Hunter and its bullshit, so I adapt to this kind of stuff.

There's entire interviews and such, but I can give you bullet points;

>Survival horror
>Torch your only weapon
>Less about enemy designs, supposed to be designed around people's natural fear of darkness
>Strange Kafka-esque hub world with weird npcs to interact with
>Puzzle solving was supposed to be as big of a focus as combat
>Art style would've been heavily inspired by horror manga, notably Junji Ito

Also I believe Suda and/or Mikami were supposed to direct the game. Not some random Italian fuck.

Suda has said the entire experience has given him second thoughts about letting huge companies publish his stuff.

I still enjoyed the game and adore the concept art, but I really hope one day we'll get to see that original concept.

>be 12
>get .hack//Infection as a birthday gift
>wow the characters look cool as fuck.jpg
>realize this plays exactly like an early 2000's MMO without internet
>actually getting into the story
>finish part 1, thrilled

>watch a SIGN rerun on TV
>love it
>study incredibly hard for good grades so my parents can buy Mutation/Outbreak/Quarantine
>see SIGN easter eggs there and there
>holy shit i can get a tsukasa AI in my party
>so cool.jpg
>complete 'em
>.hack became my favorite games

That shit is deeply ingrained into my childhood.

Two Worlds really fits your description.
Also happens to be one of my favorite games.

Deception 4

>>378330341
But thats not dead souls/1(gameplay wise)

Gameplay wise it was the best until zero.
>>
>>378323658
I remember seeing that hyped up a lot in an old Gametrailers video, only for it to be released to zero fanfare
>>
>>378341105
Thank you!
>>
>>378322897
I beat it.

It's meh, short, ugly, I think boss fights were kind of ok though.

Don't remember any of the charm in the latter half, or hell, even the ending.
>>
>>378326252
No, MK vs. DC did.
>>
>>378341105
I just looked it up and I totally remember playing Trapt when I was younger! I didn't know it had a sequel. How does it stack up to the previous titles in your opinion?

dark sector was supposed to be what warframe is today, but people were like

"ayy we need a game to showcase our xbox graphix so you can't do online, you need to make it CoD tier so people will like it"

and thats why we have warframe.
>>
Threadly reminder that a number of these games have become backwards compatible on Xbone/Scorpio and almost all the rest are eligible to be added. All you gotta do is pressure the publisher to give the okay to Microsoft.
>>
>>378340682
I remember it being pretty funny but the gameplay itself was lousy.

The "sequel" was way better.
>>
>>378340682
>>378341848
Both games are backwards compatible on Xbone as of last week fwiw.
>>
>>378341505
been ages but i think dark sector did have online, recall a mode where people played as the squishy hazmat grunts you fought in the sp chasing a player with the powersuit form

Timeshift is backwards compatible. Wouldn't surprise me if Singularity is next.
>>378326120
This just got a PC port along with Charlie Murder. I recommend both (on sale).
>>378327482
I remember playing through the Typing part and being blown away when I realized that it included a port of House of the Dead: Overkill. Really great value for $20 total.

>>378327768
A Tenchu game just got made backwards compatible so this is probably coming as well.

>>378340254
Dark Void is backwards compatible.
>>
>>378341195
Most of the charm is in the soundtrack, mechanically it's a shallow beat-em-up with mandatory buttbumps for fast progress

poorly received? I remember LP being quite popular and well received upon release. Obviously there were feminists throwing shit fits as usual but that's about it.
>>
>>378335240
The real question is what are PS3 games like Shinobido and Way of the Samurai? Low-budget but fun-as-fuck gameplay.
>>
>>378345343
Depends on release price, £20ish and I'd put put them down as (good) budget games. Shame that market is just about gone now, taken over by overpriced throwback indieshit
>>
>>378340682
I actually bought it on XO during recent sale and it is just bad. It is not that funny and the gameplay really sucks.
>>
>>378327482

Played this on the Wii, fun times.
>>
>>378346617
Release price doesn't matter. It's not like WotS3 still sells at 60$ or something.
>>
>>378323078
this game was pretty fun. I'd wait around for 30 minutes just to get a 1v1 going.
