It was hype at the end of Gargoyles (the show OPs pic related is from). Unfortunately, the show turned to Goliath Chronicles which sucked ass and made waste of this trope.

Valkyrie Profile. At one point in the true ending there's one common enemy who everyone would like to get fucked to save the protagonist. Your party and two bosses (one of them optional "you're supposed to lose this fight kiddo" type of boss that wrecks you in one turn if you try to fight him) join up arms, and unlike usually when antagonists join you and they get greatly decreased stats, both retain their original boss battle tier stats. This means that the fight with the common enemy is an absolute one-sided curbstomp and ended in one turn.
