Turn based hating babies are asleep.

Let's have a jrpg thread. What are your favorites? Play any recently? Looking forward to anything coming out?

Phone posting though so enjoy the only image I have on here that shows the whole series

I've been looking forward to Ni no Kuni 2 for a while now so hopefully we get some more news soon
Even if the first one was a bit mediocre, I still had a good time and didn't regret playing it
>>
Redpill me on the Atelier series. Is it grindy? Is it vapid waifu shit? Do the waifus have any actual personality or are they all just the same cutout of a cute girl looking & being cute?
>>
>>378284594
Atelier is pure waifu shit and they're not even good waifus

Kumatora is amazing but please no waifufagging.

You have played Mother 3 right? It is honestly my favorite game ever made, flaws and all.

Trash, like a step above nep in quality. If your weeb well then its your typical weebshit so you'll enjoy but in terms of actual quality it is trash.

Lunar 2 is my favorite JRPG, I've played it so many times I decided to try something a little different by playing the Sega CD version. About halfway through now. The remake is definitely a straight improvement, but the original is still good.
>>
>>378284581
I really hope it has puzzles instead of "hmm I wonder if we have a spell that can burn this pillar". Shit would have been so much better if it gave you a chance to think for yourself. Lock some items behind the puzzles, making it where you can't obtain them if you do the puzzle wrong, like in Golden Sun.
>>
>>378284581
>>378285672
The Ghibli art was always a point of interest but would you honestly recommend it?
>>
>>378285862
It's not bad, but it's not a must play
I'd say get it if it's cheap and if you have a lot of free time
>>
>>378284581
Same. Didn't they announce 2 during the last E3? Hope we get a release date for this one.
>>
>>378285862
The game has tons of monsters, but some are clearly better than others as in night and day difference. The game WON'T let you make any mistakes with exploration as it flat out tells you how to solve any "puzzle". Story, atmosphere, music, visuals, and so on are pretty good to me though. If you have a ton of JRPGs to play, it might not be at the top of the list, but it isn't a complete waste of time.
>>
>>378284192
>JRPG

turn based strategy. there is no role play in "JRPGs"
>>
>>378285390
What's the best version of the first game?
>>
>>378288497
Most say PS1, though some tend to prefer the Sega CD version. I believe the PSP version has bonus content and a more accurate script, Working Designs was a questionable translator. Just avoid the GBA port, it's garbage.
>>
>>378284192

Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy X, Dragon Quest VIII

I played Radiant Historia recently and enjoyed it a lot. I was playing Tokyo Mirage Sessions on Wii U but I stopped because I got frustrated. I might go back to it later.

Other than that, I'm knee deep in P5 and loving it. Ryuji best boy.

Same. I've gone through at least five times, loved every minute. One of the few games on a short list to tug at something deep down.
>>
>Play any recently?
I did a big FF replay except in Japanese. Starting in January, 1-10 and Tactics. Now I'm playing the DQ series for the first time, just started 4 today.
>>
Dragon Quest is my absolute favourite JRPG series.
I largely dislike WRPGs for their generic tolkien wank settings and ugly visuals but I love the decision making and actual roleplaying flexibility that some like Fallout, Deus Ex and Planescape had in the late 90s. I wish JRPGs would adopt those aspects a little more. Just stay the fuck away from everything else.

Fuck, I wish my boss was even a fraction as cool as yours. Nice.
>>378289737
Over the years I've been more critical of the game and while it's flaws are more apparent to me I just can't say it's not my favorite game. It really is a beautiful game.
>>
>>378284192
Digital Devil Saga duology is old at this point, but I got into it recently. I'm really enjoying it because ironically unlike other JRPGS it's 80% gameplay and maybe 20% cutscenes yet there's just enough story to keep you wanting more.
>>
>>378288497
PS1. The PSP version isn't quite as fun or charming. Plus I found it too easy (keeping in mind the PS1 version isn't super difficult in the first place).

You ever play the MOTHER/Earthbound series? I played them as I heard they were sci fi modern day Dragon Quest games and I think I enjoy them more then DQ honestly.
>>
>>378290548
Yeah, I just compared them on youtube. In PSP version the music resets every time you enter a door and transitions seem longer. PS1 it is then.
>>
>>378290654
I absolutely I have, played them before DQ in fact.

I have more respect for FFfags then personafags honestly. FFfags at least actually debate gameplay and other actually important stuff. Personafags only play 3,4, and 5 and just debate the girls.
>>
>>378292254
Depends, sometimes they debate the pacing of the games as well.
>>
>>378286028
Sounds like it would just be better to play another game over it.
>>
>>378284594
Can be fun depending on what you play. There is some amount of crafting for your items so there is more of an emphasis on creating items that do damage than in other games since you can put on various effects on those items.
>>
Any good older games without random encounters?
>>
Any good older games without gameplay?
>>
>>378294481
How old are you talking about? Anyway there is always the Mario RPG's that don't have random encounters. Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, SaGa Frontier, Earthbound, and possibly some others.
>>
>>378294481
Not sure how old you're looking for

Grandia
Lunar 1 and 2 (the remakes)
Chrono Trigger
Threads of Fate (it's an action RPG and not a traditional JRPG but it's a great game)
>>
>>378294481
Honestly only Earthbound and Chrono Trigger come to mind. Both have their enemies on the field before entering combat.
>>
>>378284192
It's been over 20 years since Chrono Trigger. Why doesn't someone simply rip off their battle system? It was so good. And there's ways to improve upon it, or make it unique.
>>
>>378295930
Maybe try I am Setsuna. Though judging bybthe fact literally no one talks about it probably means it isn't really good.
>>
>>378295930
It's alright. There isn't anything going for it outside of combining techniques into other skills.

I've been working on a second playthrough of my favorite FF to prepare for the upcoming Four Job Fiesta. I'm not sure I'll ever make it through FJF without some kind of guide though. There's just too much information to learn if I want to make the most of the jobs I get.
>>
>>378284192
I'm playing through Cold Steel 2 right now. Of course when I started playing it Trails threads are becoming a more common thing and usually contain some kind of spoiler so I've been avoiding the shit outta those. I had already gotten spoiled like halfway through CS1 who C is and his fate. I plan on starting Trails in the Sky after I finish CS2. How related are the two?
>>
>>378296523
For whatever reason people think the ATB system of older FF games and CT added strategy, it didn't.
>>
>>378284192
SMTV, Octopath Traveler and both Atlus remakes for 3DS
>>
>>378296523
Well for 1, no battle transitions. Might not seem like that big of a deal today, but if you think about it, how many battle systems today have no battle transition *and* turn based combat? You typically get one or the other.

And 2, your techniques didn't only hit the enemies that you targeted. They also hit other enemies in proximity of the attack. This spacial awareness is hardly ever used in turn based games that aren't fixed to a grid. having attacks that actually fit inside the real space of the real world, in a turn based system is quite rare.

They could have improved upon the system, if they let the player freely choose where their techs are used, rather than fixing the proximity to a chosen enemy. They could have also included environmental elements to interact with in battle. Say an enemy happens to be standing atop of oil, then you can use fire in the vicinity of the oil to light it up, and hurt the enemy. Stuff like that. Happening on the real field. Not some closed off battle space.
>>
>>378284192
Why is there a picture of a fighting game character in there?
It's making me physically ill.
>>
>>378296131
It suffers heavily from a lack of budget. Most of the game looks the same enviroment wise and the combat makes some improvements but also suffers heavily from weird balancing issues. The skill system is equip based instead of level based, and you get the shit you need to buy skills from enemy drops. Dual/triple arts are a pain to find because of this because instead of just unlocking them you need to mix and match all the different skills you can get until you find them.
>>
>>378296836
No one thinks it adds strategy. It reduces the time you have to think of a strategy.
>>
>>378296836
It just *feels* good to play, that's why it's better. When you can't sit and think about your next move for an hour, because the enemies are active, then it makes the battles more exciting.
Or when you need a party member to catch up, so you can perform a combo attack, there's tension. You can gamble. Instead of just going "oh well, it's not their turn, so nothing I can do."
>>
>>378284192
persona isn't an rpg, it's a visual novel with dungeon crawling.
>>
>>378297426
What doesn't make it a RPG while the others are?
>>
>>378297598
It is an rpg, he's just being retarded. Though it is a shitty one.
>>
>>378297598
because that's how it is. you do LN stuff primarily, then it has some dungeon grinding. in other games you do rpg stuff 24/7

like have you ever played princess maker, princess maker has dugeon stuff too, but it's not an rpg because you spend most of the time making a princess.

For me, a "favorite" is something that I like so much that none of its flaws matter to me at all. Biggest and most obvious example is Xenogears. Disc 2 doesn't decrease my enjoyment at all, in fact I'm usually more into the game by that time.

>>378301784
You're actually the one who doesn't know the different. Self-inserting is exactly what you're doing in 95% of jrpgs. Not roleplaying. Having stats doesn't make a roleplaying game. Actually roleplaying does. Controlling premade characters is not roleplaying. Otherwise fighting games are roleplaying games.
>>
>>378285862
Ni No Kuni is a weird one. It's unmatched for charm and style - for the opening few hours. Then it's monotony, repetition and frustration for the dozens of remaining hours. For example, I struggle to think of a more ill-conceived battle system.

>>
>>378284594
I am not a weeb and I've only played Atelier Ayesha.

The characters are indeed all stereotypes, although they are oddly likeable and they all have their own arc with some simple character development. The main draw of the game was the alchemy, which is super addictive and satisfying. And I enjoyed OHKing enemies with bombs I'd cooked up.

The biggest surprise for me was how calm and positive the game is. It was actually a real joy to play at times because of that. Maybe I'm just a closeted weeb underneath it all.
>>
>>378304251
you're a closeted something, i buy these games for my daughter, they're for little girls.
>>
Ive been playing FFT for the first time and I wasnt expecting it to be this good. Although I've just got Cid and he won't stop destroying boss encounters in one move.
>>
>>378304360
Atelier is filled with so much unresolved lesbian sexual tension that I hope you're not planning on getting any grandkids.
>>
I'm debating on whether or not to import Dragon Quest XI when it comes out in a couple of months.
I've managed to complete Kingdom Hearts 1, and playing through 2 now in Japanese but I'm really familiar with those games and there's minimal dialogue, most of it voiced.
>>
>>378285862
It's an okay game. The first few hours make it seem like it's going to be amazing. Great visuals, music, tons of voice acting, first town and dungeon is great to explore, the magic system seems interesting, etc. Then it just shits the bed. Voice acting all but disappears, the other towns are empty and boring, collecting monsters is tedious, battle system is terrible. Biggest disappointment for me was the magic outside of battle. They make you think like it'll be a huge deal, one character even gives you really interesting spells but you can't ever use them, they're just for flavor text in your book.
