Just manga, in the beginning it was just about one couple but now its about dozens, and it can't keep its focus on one, but i think it's still worth a read.

I think it kind of depends on if there's any gameplay element to it barring dialogue choices. I wouldn't call the Tokimeki Memorial games VNs for example, because they've got minigames and stat building. Long Live The Queen and Ace Attorney are more games than VNs too.

But stuff like Hatoful Boyfriend or Katawa or 95% of the otome and dating sims out there in general aren't really games, I guess.

Muv-Luv Alternative has some of the best presentation you'll find in any visual novel. Quality of the story is debatable, mostly because people either like or hate the MC and you need so suffer through some 30 hours of shitty school life before you get to the good bits.
Rewrite is easily Key's best work, for the love of god don't watch 8bit's shitty anime adaptation.
The House in Fata Morgana is one of the best stories told in visual novels and has the benefit of great art and music to make up for the lack of voice acting.

S is an incredibly weak follow up with poor characterisation, shitty and short routes for everyone that isn't Tsubame and Mon, and a final route that is an absolutely abysmal imitation of the original's Agave with none of the build up from the other routes making it satisfying.

I also hope that you don't like Kokoro, because her route is one of the most unfortunate victims. I'm still mad.

The A games so far have been a lot better though, and A-2 has one of the best routes of the entire franchise.

No, that's total bullshit. The entire series, Zero Escape, is actively worse because ZTD exists. Absolutely. ZTD is trash that makes the story of the series not nearly as good. But 999 and VLR are still just the same as they were, and if the third entry taints things for you, I'd argue that you need to learn how to take things on their own. If you can't replay 999 and VLR without focusing on how shit ZTD is, that's a personal problem, and the same goes for Mass Effect.

In all honesty, it's not worth getting into them if you don't know moon.

The translations are mostly god-awful and in general most of them just aren't plain any good. Pacing is the biggest issue. Most of them are way too long, and without any kind of gameplay, it just means you're going to be reading hours of boring and poorly written scenarios (again the translations just make the prose a complete chore that makes it even worse). The hours of tediousness aren't worth the good bits.

Maybe try something like Sengoku Rance if you're really interested, as the gameplay is pretty fun.
