Why do people like here like dragon's dogma again? I'm about 25 hours in and after realizing how small the world is, how non-fucking skillful the combat is, and how everything is progression based, I'm thinking about quitting. Seriously, I'm about level 40 and have explored basically the entire map already.
>>
The game completely changes post-game and there are tons of dragons and other cool shit to kill

I like the combat because it is fun. No rpg games have only skillful combat as far as I am aware.

Hold out till BBI
>>
The entire game is the prequel for BBI
Also, this is pretty well thought of as a flawed gem, not a masterpiece

The open world aspect is the worst part of it. BBI and Everfall are the real game.
>>
>>378275536

>Just seems like gear and levels > being good at the game.

You are 100% correct.

You can shit on anything in the game with gear and a little bit of weakness know how.
>>

You don't have to like or play it faggot.
I think it's GOAT but if you're not enjoying it play a different game for fuck's sake.

youve got to let the game be fun. What do you mean there's no skill involved early game? Honestly that's where I felt the most skill was involved, when you are low level and most enemies present lethal in 2 or 3 blows. Make sure you're playing on hard
>>
>>378275578
See, I delayed going to BBI because I thought it was going to be just like a sideshow attraction. Only played the main part of the game.

Should I revisit the game?

Unpopular opinion but I think the size of the world is fine. It's big enough to feel substantial but small enough that, despite being open world, it has actual level design.
>>
>>378275974
this must be a meme. I tried DAI and can get past the beginning part of the game. Bosses seem extremely lame auto attack fests after playing a game like Dogma. And all the dialogue just feels like it gets in the way. Although I liked the witcher maybe it's just not my style anymore.

DD is a difficult game to enjoy on the surface. It's unfinished, janky and b-grade. The story is rubbish and the questing is generic.

However, the nuances and idiosyncrasies underneath are what makes it really stick for some. Like the first time you notice your pawns copying your combat style, or a tall/brawny pawn carrying a tiny pawn over a river so they can fit through a small hole and retrieve a Large Nut for master.

What really got me hooked what one of the first escort quests that took you across the world at low level which would take a whole day/night cycle fighting through goblins, gators, the ogres and the bandit fort, only to run out of oil for my lantern and have my npc wrecked by a chimera in the dark. The Everfall and BBI are also great endgame ideas and the Ur Dragon was my favourite part.

Temper your expectations going in, it's not a masterpiece but for me at least, it was the best 7/10 I've played.
>>
>>378276395
I prefer lore and story instead of just climbing on some monster with some random ass pawn dude. Different strokes i guess.
>>
there's aught to see in the aught

>>378276930
I wish there was a game that had a good mix. Action/fun combat and good story. Closest I think is the original dark souls.

Question, just started the game too, picked strider. Is the combat depth really just running around at max speed stunlocking enemies with my daggers and ocassionally bowing people? Don't I get some crit bonus for backstabbing or crawling on monsters or something?

I recently started a warrior playthough. I'm not terrible far in the game (just started my first Wrym Hunt quest) but I will say this.

Fuck everything about Lost and Found. I don't know how they expected players to do that quest when some of the bandits can one shot you compared to the bandits you meet on the way to Gran Soren.
>>
>>378273502
At this point I'm figuring DD is just a love it or hate it thing. I was in love with it from the demo on 360 and played the shit out of that till the game came out. DD is pretty much as close to my dream fantasy game to ever exist.

I agree anon. /V/ actually lied about this one. Combat is not skillful, you just grind to level up and spam melee attacks as if they were MMO spells. Really disappointing bullshit.

If only the entire game could have been as great as BBI was. They could have ditched the pointless open world and just had you travel to dungeons similar to BBI instead. Like that one behind the waterfall with the quest for the slabs. That was cool as fuck. It's a shame there wasn't more of that in general.

I feel like the discussion for dd has reached its peak. I'm sure the re-release on ps4/xbox will drum up interest in the game again, but what the fuck is there for us to talk about?

Any actual action game. Sure it's leaps and bounds above Skyrim and shit but less than anything involving the standard attack, block, dodge, party, movement mechanics of all action games ever made. There is actually a fair amount of skill involved when it comes to taking down larger beasts. You need to be mindful of where you are in relation to the beast. I'll give two examples

Armored Cyclopes: If you wanna take these fuckers down quickly, climb on and knock off their leg armor. Once done, get them on all fours and focus on smashing the helmet off. If you have any pawns with experience fighting cyclopes, they'll likely yell at you at what to attack. Attack the head until dead.

Chimeras: You actually learn how to fight these in the prologue. You need to disable or cut off the snake and goat so that they won't become a threat to you. Having a mage to help with the poison and sleep makes it easy.

Melee does seem fairly spammy at first, but other vocations are unique enough to warrant trying them out. Sorcerers are known for having some crazy ass spells.

Scather/Mitigator. Give it a good bow and give it strength augments to max out damage. Skills used are up to you. Generally tenfold flurry is the best.

>>
>>378281461
For augments, go for the physical ones like clout or vehemence for extra strength, maybe some climbing/bow augments if you want.

Ranger gets pretty damn strong with high STR, some damn powerful skills with the longbow like tenfold or Gamble, but you'll only get basic dagger skills.

>>
>>378273502
The game itself is really fun, but the class/leveling system is a huge mess. The fact that you have to level up as a completely different class in order to be good with the one you actually want to play is just a huge red flag that something went horribly wrong
>>
>>378282519
put port crystals at the rest camps and the cliff overlooking cassardis by the backdoor to witchwood and that covers pretty much everything. in ng+ you have so much gold and 5 more crystals you can put crystals all over the place. if it also bothers you that much just use hooks mod and give yourself 100 crystals and have fun.

Man, Fighter looks fun.

One thing I really like about this game is how they actually made the base classes meaningful and possible to use compared to the advanced classes except Mage.
>>
>>378282661
I think they tried to encourage one character using all/most of the classes, so you'd have more balanced stats and augments from several classes.

All it did in the end was make people play up to rank 9 in a bunch of classes and pick up the 2 or 3 they really wanted.

The difference between a level 50 Sorcerer and a level 50 Magic Knight is like 100 Magick. That's a huge difference anywhere but BBI with maxed-out gear. It's like wearing equipment that is from the start of the game and you're halfway through.

The difference between a Fighter and Sorcerer is even bigger.

yeah, if you enjoy spending 3 years casting enchantments and other spells before you can actually do shit. Both Assassin and Fighter are better for the pure Sword + Board experience. Mystic Knight has two uses:

>you want to be a magic knight
>you want to be a battle mage

All of MK's best damage comes from casting spells before / during the fight. Pretty slow, clunky ones, too. Not saying it's a bad or boring class, but it's a completely different animal to Fighter and Assassin.

If they were to take DDO's changes to the gameplay and put that in DD2, I would be incredibly happy with the final result.

As you level strider gets a dodge roll. A full bend to the head sends most humans flying backwards. There is another strider move to rope human sized or smaller enemies and pull them into the ground face first. Best of all though is jumping and unleashing a helm/skull/brain splitter, slashing the ever loving fuck out of their heads.

Ever class is boring as shit at the start but lots of sweet ass shit unlocks at the higher class ranks.

For any melee class you should grab the +damage augments from Fighter and Warrior or at least the stronger Warrior one if you don't want to use two spots on straight damage. The +damage resistance from Warrior is also really effective.

The climbing stab, Dire Gouge I think is extremely useful on big monsters and their weak points, and the counter is a reliable way to avoid damage even against giant monsters and feels really satisfying.

Additive isn't inherently bad, and it's not "only for progression games". Additive simply has no frills. It forces you to balance properly in order to achieve a balanced game. Multiplicative gives you a lot of cushions.

That said, additive games are far simpler to balance properly than multiplicative games are. Multiplicative games have hidden traps in them everywhere, and almost always have a clear "best" option no matter how hard you balance. That, or your balance is completely meaningless, and no matter what the player does they either become insanely OP or must follow a very strict set of building rules in order to even do endgame content. It is very easy to avoid these issues in an additive game, as long as you are aware of what you are doing. It is almost impossible to avoid them in multiplicative games. It probably IS impossible to avoid them in any form of exponential game.

Since you can comfortably do endgame content in MH with any good set of armor and weapon. There's not need to follow a specific guide or setup to be able to complete it.

Did DDO ever get rid of that dumb as fuck choice to lock Vocations behind levels of other vocations, I remember wanting to try out Warrior with 6 slots but it said I'd have to level fighter to level 51 or some bullshit.

And Alchemist is pretty rad.

I guess the only real downside they have once you get going is that you don't have a lot of direct damage on your own, but rely on perfect blocks to bounce the damage back.
Slowing an enemy and then just juggling them in the air for a while never gets old though.

I'm like 90% sure that DD doesn't even have a flat-defense system the way he describes. It's very similar, but there's no way it's exactly as he says. There are too many discrepancies.

I think that it's a combination of levels influencing the damage formula and defense having some sort of "relative scaling", where it's more effective the more you have of it compared to the damage you take. It creates this illusion that small changes are having huge effects, but really there are large changes having large effects, and you're just "interpolating" the result.

That is to say, if you take 100 damage with 50 defense and take 50 damage, and then you get 99 defense and take 1 damage, you think "oh, you just subtract, so 1 defense = 1 less damage". But that's an interpolation. 1 defense might not make a difference. Going from 98 defense to 99 might not be going from 2 to 1 damage. It might be going from 10 to 1 damage, or 1 to 1 damage. But it creates an illusion, especially if you mix it with level scaling.
>>

I think the issue is that DD gives you the illusion of being skill-based when it isn't. It's also VERY harsh when it comes to its stat and level requirements. The open world doesn't help.

But you're right. It does follow a basic tenet of old-school open-world design. The enemies are there for you to fight at any time. You just need to get stronger to win against them. Again, I think the main problem is that DDDA so closely resembles DMC or MH or SotC, so people have different expectations going into it.

Sure, but skill is not THE factor. Levels and gear are far more important.

You can reasonably complete Dark Souls at level 1 with the broken sword hilt thingy, it doesn't even take that long, you're not just doing chip damage against all the bosses. What matters is your skill and knowledge. And if you don't have those, it is incredibly difficult to just "grind through" the content. It makes things easier, but it doesn't trivialize them, it isn't the difference between being oneshot and taking 1 damage, or dealing 1 damage and dealing 1 BAR of damage.

You CAN do just about anything in any action-based game. What matters is what the game FACILITATES you doing, and how it does so. DD massively favours you the more levels and better gear you get, and massively punishes you for falling behind. And your pawns aren't as skilled as you, so they'll inevitably end up dying repeatedly even if you're skilled enough to beat the drake at level 20.
>>
>>378294803
>What is there to manage?
Getting a new one every time they die, mostly. I guess I could have just tried skipping it while I was playing but I honestly didn't even think of it then.

Is hard mode really more fun that normal, what's different and how much harder is it? Is it ok to start a new character for it or should I just switch over with the one I had before?

Pawns can be a pain because they are so dumb. You have to give them plenty of healing items if you don't want to play with a mage, they will pick up and use things that you'd rather them not (like flasks, arrows, buff items). Have to manage their inventory separately from yours at an inn.

You have to go pick them up when they die from being stupid, and now they're at half health and won't use aforementioned healing items so they are apt to die again. Then you have to go resummon them or pick new ones which can be a chore rifling through all the trash and if you are dismissing them instead of them just dying, you have to click through the rating bullshit.

Dragon's Dogma has the exact same problem Nioh has. Feels like somebody made an Action game and then stapled the RPG elements on top.

Is the combat flashy and satisfying? Absolutely, but it's all so terribly unbalanced that any tactics or player skill becomes completely secondary. You basically have to actively try to not break the game with OP shit; which is a shame since both combat systems have a lot of nuance. I don't know if the makers of Ninja Gaiden and DMC should lean so heavily old-school tabletop RPG elements in their games. Their combat design philosophy doesn't mix very well with it.

I literally didn't say that, moron. I said that Dragon's Dogma doesn't FACILITATE you being skilled, doesn't reward you for it, while Dark Souls DOES.

You CAN kill the Drake at level 1 with your starting gear. But there's a gulf of difference between that and playing DS at level 1 with the sword hilt. Dragon's Dogma wants you to level up. Dark Souls wants you to be skilled. It doesn't matter that DD requires you to be skilled or that DS makes it easier on you if you level up. The point is that DD is more focused on your levels and gear, and DS is more focused on your skills and your strategy. That is MORE focused, not ENTIRELY focused. One isn't necessarily better or worse than the other.

Fuck, I actually DISLIKE DS and LIKE DD. But because I'm an objectively-minded person, I can see through to their respective designs and understand the differences between them. I can understand why comparing them might be useful. Apparently, you can't. All you can see is "muh dark souls".

So... underleveling in Dogma is harder than underleveling in Dark Souls... but Dogma doesn't facilitate skill as much as Dark Souls.

Really makes me think.
>>
>>378297284
I feel they do a good enough job making all the enemies different despite reskins.

Like Corrupted variants needing you to destroy the crap growing out of them to knock them over instead of simply doing damage.
So seeing what they're going to do with armored and undead variants of large enemies looks neat.

>>
>>378297309
>So... underleveling in Dogma is harder than underleveling in Dark Souls... but Dogma doesn't facilitate skill as much as Dark Souls.
Yes. It directly fucking follows.

We assume that two things can make a game easy - numbers and personal skill. We look at a case where the player has low numbers. One game is easier than the other game in this case. In that case, the easier game must reward / facilitate skill more than the other one does, because skill makes a game easier, and that game is easier than the other game.

It is basic logic. If it makes you think, then you seriously need to get smarter.
>>
>>378297518
More than DD and a lot of games. The skill thing has definitely been exaggerated, but it does expect patience and thinking a bit about your situation which are skills most gamers don't seem to have much of. Or you could just look up a walkthrough like half the people did on their first playthrough.

It does mine. You can make it as hard or as easy as you want, within limitation, and BBI has a really great atmosphere.

It's a 3d action game with i-frames and a parry mechanic. It's as close as anything else.

Bullshit. I don't really want to start a whole argument here or anything, but they're barely similar at all. Does DD even have i-frames?

Yes, Exodus Slash and its different variants have a few moments, it needs to be perfectly timed but it is usually chains to an attacks.

While like others said the postgame/DLC is different to the main game, if you're already not enjoying it now it may not be worth it to keep going.
If you really want to stick with it you may want to just focus on the main story until the main dragon fight, and if you still aren't interested after that fight then you can probably just drop it

Yeah. Several Vocations do. Warrior and Strider at least. Assassin has two different parries and Fighters and Mystic Knights both get a just frame block.

If Dark Souls had a climbing mechanic it would feel amazingly similar to DD. It's really only different in that regard and how stats work.

I mean hell, I think both games even run on Havoc.

You should. Game deserves it.

I'll respect your opinion but I really can't understand it at all. And you do know that Havoc isn't a game engine, right? It's just the physics engine, lots of games use it.
>>
>>378298671
>but I really can't understand it at all.
If you were to play a sword-n-board assassin without climbing, and compare that to playing Dark Souls, you'd feel it immediately.

That is where the familiarity begins and ends, but it's there.

I would have to disagree, souls is rather methodical and has an ebb and flow in it's combat while dogma is very fast paced and offensive. When you play as a fighter, you get stuff like a stinger and a launcher, very aggressive stuff.

The biggest problem with DD is that the DLC is so much better than the base game that it's fucking impossible to go back. I played the game nonstop when the port came out, until I was able to beat Daimon 2.0 easily and decided to finally wrap things up. I had planned on doing a new playthrough immediately, but stopped as soon as I started that awful trek to Gran Soren.

Just entertained that you think going one link from one artistic borrowing somehow means the first link is the creator.

Berserk borrowed all that shit just like Souls or anyone else did. Berserk didn't invent iron maidens, wolf masks, effeminate avian knights, silver rapiers, or rape.

Constantly entertained by people who think Berserk "invented" these age-old, many-times-repeated cultural motifs and themes.

>I bet JRR Tolkien based Lord of the Rings on berserk
That's true actually.
>>
>>378300272
I don't think it's unlikely that Berserk inspired Dark Souls simply because the team is fans of it. Berserk definitely didn't invent a lot of these things but there ARE designs in Berserk that are unique and Dark Souls definitely uses them or has characters that fight like Berserk characters.

I think the whole "idea ownership inventor" shit is obnoxious but it's pretty clear Berserk inspired the games.

What, you mean "upgrade a weapon to its final form (usually 270-300 true attack and natural white sharpness for G rank games) and then if you're gud you can literally win without even equipping armor, otherwise upgrade literally ANY armor to functional defense levels regardless of inherent skill bonuses?" Yeah if you want to minmax for autistism-tier speedrunning you'll discover or copy optimal gear setups (surprise, that's the nature of having finite possible encounters and finite quantities of fixed equipment there are only so many ways you can combine them and some WILL be better than others) but the only hard limit on your progression/completion is your ability to deal enough damage within the quest time limit, and the difference between "absolute best" and "mediocre" within any given weapon class is hardly game-breaking.

>does DD even have i-frames

Dodge roll with daggers, several red vocation attacks like Compass Slash, Hindsight Strike (functions like a dodge+followup attack, followup actually gets a HUGE buff if you dodge through a hit and the whole attack is invulnerable regardless) Dragon's Maw, Exodus Slash, the duration of a Just Guard (invincible during the animation even to attacks other than the one deflected). With enough defense and/or using the Temerity augment charge-up attacks like Arc of Deliverance provide you with enough situational defense to no-sell most attacks despite not being literally invincible. Sheltered Assault and Shield Slam are also technically not invulnerable, but you count as blocking for the whole attack; assault blocks frontal attacks while slam bizarrely protects you all around. Masterful Kill's stance isn't invulnerable but if the counter is triggered then you're invulnerable through the animation.

What's the best way to build a magic archer?

11-30 Warrior
31-50 Assassin

>>
>>378301275
why warrior and assassin? all you literally need is +magic. you'll be in the back shooting sparkly arrows of rape and never getting hit. you dont need a terribly large stamina pool because you will hit like a truck and you'll eventually have a gorillion gold to buy stam pots anyways. there is no need to min max because like its been said before bbi gear is essentially game breakingly powerful and the vanilla game is not super hard (even on hard)
>>
>>378301275
you do realize that by the time you've hit level 100 you'll have already beaten the entirety of the main game and dlc, meaning you won't even play a magic archer until NG+

If it's your first time don't bother with minmaxing. I fell for that meme and it'll make your playthrough less fun. Play what you want when you want. Try out other vocations for fun or for getting their augments.
>>
>>378301275
>>378301849
Dragon's Dogma really doesn't require so much min maxing. A little more on hard mode but even then you can just go through trying out the classes that seem fun and when you land on the one you want to use for good, just equip all the augments you've gained that seem appropriate to that class. Don't worry about it so much.

Level 10 is the earliest point you can switch to advanced and hybrid vocations. You'll probably be past that by the time you get to Gran Soren but if you go to the docks in Cassardis at night and speak with the spoopy lady she can change your vocation as well. I'm not sure if any magick bows are available that early in the game though, which means you'd be stuck with just daggers/staff for a while.
>>
>>378301849
first playthrough dont even worry about it much. really, if you want to "min max" just maybe go fighter up to rank 5 for sinew, switch to warrior and get rank 1 for bastion, then max sorcerer for acuity and articulacy (which stacks with wymrking's ring so make sure you dupe that at the black cat) then switch to MA forever. you can cherry pick some more augs to make you a little more survivable, but again you're going to be way the fuck out of range of most attacks. MA's are very mobile and their skills charge up fast. if you even remotely daggers instead then just go assassin, because MAs strength is bows and they will kick the shit out of the game with a bow.
>>
>>378302175

Yeah it's Rudy ENB or something similar named on the Nexus. Causes some strange particle effects in the Grigori scene at the end of the game and sometimes is too dark but is otherwise really good

>minmaxing
as most people say, min-maxing is not necessary

however
str or mag growth does make a very noticeable difference. If you spent the first 70 levels as a red class, your damage will be utter shit as a sorcerer, unless you're wielding a gold dragonforged tier II bbi weapon.
I speak from personal experience. I heard about all the "equipment is all that matters" memes and went to try and explore bbi as a sorcerer with a tier II non-dragonforged staff I found.
It was awful. All those uber-powerful spells and they would take at most 1-2 (3 if using the right element. bars of a regular post-game big monster like a cockatrice or gorechimera

later I restarted the game, and went pure mage->sorcerer. I'm at level 50 and with a fucking 1-star staff that you get from killing grigori I can clown on garms using nothing but high brontide.
>>
>>378306891
I don't minmax my Arisen, however I minmax my Pawn because people love to jerk off over stats.

I use hookmod to adjust stats every 20 levels or so because I'd rather godsbane irl than play the game as a class I don't enjoy so I can play the class I do enjoy after the game is over

E.g. playing as sorcerer to be MA

I've done the level 10 - 200 assassin run for one character, and one fully min maxed pawn legitimately. I'm not going through that again
>>
>>378307178
I think that's excessive. All you really need to do is decide
>magic or str
and if magic, go blue or green, and never pick red
and if str, go red or green, and never pick blue.

>>
>>378306891
Definitely not necessary. I started as Fighter, then throughout the game went Warrior>Mage>Sorceror>Mystic Knight and the damage was fine but I decided Warrior was more fun so back to Warrior and did Grigori, Everfall and BBI with no stat issues.

you just have to make your pawn a skanky slutbag pornstar-alike.

then you can pimp her out for mad profit
>>
>>378307307
That's fair enough. On the warriors I took to 200 though, I changed the levels every 20 or so, so that from 100 - 200 was fighter levels instead.

Warrior HP still bugged from 100 - 200.

>>378307596
It's fun and the best in a game that has nothing else going for it. That looks like a terrible game and assortment of characters for this argument though. Damn I can't contain my fucking boner looking at that Irish Wharf.

When I make a new character I'll make her full support slut uguu~~ and swim in tribute
>>
>>378307834
If you're going to get a mage, use that staff that auto revives her.
>>
>>378307870
>>378307834
Legions Might yeah. Sell the ruminators monocle when you get to gran soren and buy it from Montebank immediately.

Also use Grapnel. The amount of mage pawns who do not have Grapnel makes me sad
>>
>>378307549
You clearly did not spend enough time as a mage>sorcereror for it to matter.

It only really starts hurting if you spend 50+levels in a class with the lowest growth.

So if you switch a lot its fine
if you play mostly green classes its fine

but going from pure warrior to sorc after 50 levels is not fine, nor is going from pure sorc to warrior after 50 levels.

I mean, you can still kill shit, but instead of annihilating things with your maelstrom/arc of deliverance, you just knock them about a bit
>>
>>378307870
>use that staff that auto revives her.
Elaborate, this is my first time playing double D.
>>378307942
Oh, okay that's how you get the staff then. Any other neat tricks I can do? I'm open to anything. Also what is Grapnel?

Am currently lvl 40 assassin, spooked away the cockatrice from gran soren and now I need to do some big mission or something.

I really love this game

that's just because the ingame screenshotter takes punky <500 kb jpegs or some whacked ass propretary format '.sga' that makes 4MB + screenshots i can't even find a program that'll open them...

in game my vulcan and romulans both have great firm curvy asses and thicc thighs with enough hips to still have DAT GAP. as well as great curvy bouncy breasts and fit bodies to go with their cute faces.

screenshots are just like 1/6th of what the games shows

>>378308129
Grapnel is a spell that basically holds enemies immobile/very slow, it's very useful. Another thing to keep in mind is that sometimes a dragonforged/3 star rusted staff can be more useful than legions might on a pure support pawn. They can torpor enemies when they use grapnel on them. Torpor is a status effect that renders them very slow for a period of like 30 seconds
>>
>>378305893
i used money bag
>>
>grapnel

If I find a pawn with the ultimate mage loadout: high spellscreen, high grapnel, and both healing spell and the status-clearing spells
and non guardian inclinations, that guy is hired immediately.
>>
>>378273502

It's something different enough with the pawns and monster climbing. Makes up for the generic everything else.

utilitarian-medicant

Utilitarian makes her use all those wonderful support spells like grapnel and spellscreen, medicant makes her heal.

One of the best support pawns I've come across (Kaeryn, I think she's rank 10 worldwide) has Utilitarian/Mitigator/Medicant (Medicant is the third, invisible inclination).

Utilitarian-Medicant is probably still good like >>378308721 says but you should give both a go to see which one she behaves better with.

>>378308739
strider and ranger are green classes right?
Both get okay str and mag growth, something like 3 mag 3 str for strider and 4 str 3 mag for ranger
this makes them ideally suited to mix and match with both red and blue classes
