Most communities tend to mellow out as they age. Sperglords and spazzoids tend to not be ale to devote too much attention to anything, even a video game, and so within two years or more the, online community becomes vastly more tolerable, as those who can express themselves without freaking out or going full AD/HD hang around.

I've been paying DaS3 lately, and I haven't been ganked or bad-mouthed, even once. Stark contrast to the first few months of DaS2. Fightclub at the old iron bridge was fun, but there was always a handful of gankers who'd bitch at you when you black crystal'd out.

I don't know if this counts, but there's a pseudo-community around Koei's grand strategy games (e.g. Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Nobunaga's Ambition)

Anons are genuinely helpful and can discuss the games with levels of civility you'd never find on /v/. The games fit a very niche audience, though, and players tend to be a little more intelligent on average.

Also, I don't usually see hostile behavior coming from bilingual English gamers who discuss import-only games and series. (Not talking about groups who release fan translation patches. Those communities are most definitely rampant with antisocial drama.)

Natural Selection, a niche Half Life mod that blends fps with RTS gameplay. The community was really tight knit and helpful to new players at its height. I hear Natural Selection 2 had a similar community but I never played it myself so I can't confirm.
