So I've been under a rock in regards to 14 for some time, last time I actively played was before 3.1 dropped. But I didn't stop playing due to the game but due to just playing other games.

I've been loyal to this game since the beginning, even through the abortion that was 1.0. I never unsubbed from the game after it became ARR. I've bought all merchandise that has had in-game items attached to it, I've never missed any limited time exclusives past 1.0, but I still have legacy status and the legacy chocobo and goobbue. I've gotten every physical collector's edition, including the original one, which I pre-ordered. I've never missed any holiday events or other events. I can collect every mount and minion in the game if I were to finish up what I have left. I have most of the relics finished, only two zodiacs are unfinished and I have roughly half of the anima weapons finished.

Stormblood is the first time I've wanted to quit this game. Everything about it is giving me bad vibes, and I'm disgusted that they've introduced pay-to-win when they said they never would when they first spoke about implementing a cash shop. I was also opposed to that and kind of had a feeling it would be for the worse in the long and look where we are now. Of course I had naysayers telling me that it was slippery slope fallacy but clearly it wasn't. Being able to buy near max level characters is inexcusable and will be a mistake in the long run.

Nothing about this expansion strikes me as exciting and I don't even have the slightest bit of hype. They aren't breaking their formula to try to do something exciting or interesting, they're just making what they already had even worse, while siphoning more money for less in return, and this is supposed to be their highest budget expansion yet, with triple the budget Heavensward had.

Any way you look at it, jump potions are the only way to go. If a potential buyer looks at the huge amount of content they would have to go through to catch up to the relevant content and join the community, they'd be disencouraged and probably wouldn't play for very long, if at all. From a business perspective, charging more money for the possibility of advancing past all the roadblocks to reach the relevant content is a good move.
Everyone can tell that Yoshi really doesn't want to do this, but he needs the sales and subs to keep the game going. That's why he's catering to the casual fanbase and the newcomers, because they number so much more than the hardcore playerbase.

Now backstory I only bought the level boost cause I wanted to play with friends who were on a different server without leaving mine, so you know what I was? A warrior. Best part is the grind isn't bad, and the end game boss fights are well designed. The game doesn't demand a lot of your time. Even if you do the highest raid tier, unless you are going for world/server first, you will probably be investing 10-15 hrs a week. Once the content is on farm you spend 3 hrs a week with the game. Leaves a lot of time to play other games.

Worst part is probably the community. I have never seen a community full of scrubs in my life. Not only are they scrubs but they are proud to be scrubs. They don't take constructive criticism well. They actually consider things like parsing to be toxic. "You don't pay my sub" is a common excuse for bad play.

The major difference with those games is that there's not a FUCKTON of story to go through, FFXIV has MANDATORY story that literally unlocks everything in the game.

As someone who recently started playing because of friends, it's fucking garbage and a waste of time, it took me 2-3 weeks to get to level 50 and that's with with skipping every cut scene and having someone pocket me with swift song.

The quests in coerthas are particularly fucking asinine and mind numbing delivery boy tier shit. The worst part is, I actually like the mechanics of the game, playing dragoon instancing through dungeons and fighting bosses is an absolute blast.

The story SHOULD be skippable pre-heavensward because it sucks dick.

The sooner you can do content the more likely you're able to do it, as once people complete content, which is usually within the first day it's available, they become more and more strict about who can join groups, and your pool of players to actually learn with dwindles more and more.

Also, let me point out a contradiction in your argument. Players who buy both a story and leveling potion will be dumped into the beginning of Stormblood with an ilvl of 150, if they're lucky. They meet the ilvl requirement for the first few dungeons, and nothing else. They have to progress through all the post-60 content naturally from there, albeit with the leniency of the newer tomestones, but that bonus isn't exclusive to the jump potions.

Leveling nowdays is entirely deterministic and you can just grind trash mobs without any capability of dying, short of going AFK for tens of minutes.
