How difficult is it to make decent low poly art compared to sprite work? I have this great idea for a game, and I'm trying to decide which I should go for, although I'm already leaning towards 3d.
Ugly, untextured low poly like your pic? Incredibly easy.

Anyway not sure how hard it is to make low poly but making sprite art is about as hard as being able to draw anything else, which is to say, really fucking hard unless you keep things extremely basic

The picture isn't really representative of what I envision, it's just the first thing that popped up on Google images.
My game would be pretty dark for one, and somewhat more detailed than that.
Low poly is the next "pixel art so retro" meme. Ive been waiting ever since i played heart and slash and evil daggers for it to gain traction. Surprised its taken this long.

If I used it, it would mostly just be for time and cost saving. I like pixel art more actually, but this game would have a wide open world with verticality, which would be hard to pull off in 2d ya know?

Yes, ugly
Untextured, hard edge low poly is the single ugliest art style and it's linked with pretentious indie trash even more often than lazy "retro" pixel art
Prove me wrong
Working on a low poly game right now as a concept artist
It's hard to do, not technically of course, but it's hard to get right
This goes for anything that is stylized, it's easy to make ugly fucking stylized game, everything from animations to shaders to texturing has to be just right
Something around the level of FF: t4HoL with more realistic proportions is about the closest thing I can think of for an example.

depends what you mean by decent.
for instance I find a lot of Cryptic-Sea's low-poly stuff pretty good.

I looked him up quickly, and while I think his style is OK, it's not what I'm going for.
harder than you think to make it look clean
Untextured low poly is easy garbage.
Actual low poly is tough but not as hard as sprite work

Honestly it is ugly. Its the lighting that makes OP's pic not look like trash.

If you can pull off something like this however, you're doing great work.
