Where have you been in the past 10 years? There were no "triple A" JRPGs whatsoever in the entire last gen. Hallway Simulator XIII obviously doesn't count. And the reason for their absence was precisely what you are saying. The closest thing to a classic AAA JRPG was Xenoblade, and that was only possible because it ran on PS2 tier hardware with low graphical demands. Now that tech has upgraded even further, these games become even more impossibly time consuming to make. Just be glad there's still a couple of them coming at all.

It seems developers have caught wind of the profit they can obtain by stringing people along. KH2FM's genius is that using one combat option often disables others. For example, if you summon, you won't be able to drive or limit, but you can still use magic. If you drive, you won't be able to summon or limit, but you will be able to use magic, if you aren't using valor. If you limit, you won't have magic available afterwards but you can still drive and summon, and so on. Because of this balancing, there's a certain element of strategy during battles. There's almost no point in the game where one option is the only thing is your go to option; there are several options for damage and they're all equally useful.

Shotlocks aren't like this. They don't affect any resource but the Focus gauge, a resource dedicated exclusively for shotlocks. Because of this, there isn't ever a reason to not use it over another when there's an opening. To be fair, BBS is such a broken fucking mess that surges eventually outpace shotlocks in term of usefulness, but for most of earlygame shotlocks are basically your best damage option and there's almost never a reason to fully unload some shotlock on an enemy. They're braindead and fairly fucking suck compared to the KH2FM systems.
