I'd actually be surprised if that were true. Every DS/3DS I've ever owned broke on the hinges or R/L buttons, and the Switch has no hinges and every button is replaceable.

Both seem pretty tough to me but the DS/3DS has more failure points

This. Elementary school teacher here, kids love Mario and Pokemon but from what I can tell, most don't own a Nintendo console. Hence why Pokemon Go and Mario Run were so popular at their respective peaks.

This way they get young adults interested and kids don't get turned off, it actually increases the appeal to them.
On the other hand, using little kids makes it unappealing to even preteens, let alone teens and young adults.
Marketing isn't solely put who you're actually aiming at in the ads.
