I think Dragon's Dogma is weirdly charming because of how poorly-made it is, and this leads lots of people to forget that it isn't actually good.

Dragon's Dogma is the game that stands out as far as good open world RPG combat goes. It's fast-paced, varied, has a lot of attention to detail, there's tactics and strategy in builds.

The two things that kill it are horrible balancing and bad enemy designs. Normal enemies die before you can do any of your flashy combos, higher difficulties almost mandate extremely boring tactics of running around shooting, special HP sponge enemies are ridiculous and you're better off hacking them to death, hacking itself is extremely repetitive and not much fun.

It should be good but it needed a lot of tuning, dramatically better encounter design, and RPG mechanics that aren't broken.

Not that guy, but I thought BotW's combat was fine. Not spectacular or anything but good and served the purpose of integrating with the rest of the game mechanics. Gives you a reason to do stuff like light your weapon on fire or fire a bow in the air. It also felt nice and physical since you could knock enemies around and they'd fly into obstacles or off cliffs. Enemies had interesting behaviors and a bunch of different attacks, like throwing other enemies at you. Also I like how active defense was, how parrying rewarded timing and dodging rewarded reading enemy patterns. It was more engaging than Nier: Automata where the dodge is ridiculously strong.

Automata's combat is extremely well-done across all characters.
The only problem is retarded enemy balancing but it's cured with just editing your level down when you start overleveling things. Still waiting on auto-scaling mod for my second run though.

DD is massively overhyped and overrated when it comes to combat system. Too easy to break, with painfully limited gameplay variety within the class thanks to retarded 6 skill slot limit, and it probably has the most boring caster classes i've ever had the displeasure to witness in ARPG, you just hold one button for 20 seconds and watch a cutscene.

There's no functional difference between robot and humanoid fights.
In fact, 2E battle is some of the most powerful in the entire game, especially if you're using a spear as it becomes a full Neo vs Smith army.

Honestly, GTA IV. It has some of the most simple, yet satisfying gunplay ever. The guns feel ferocious. It's easy, but going through an area and shooting everyone often doesn't feel as satisfying as it did in IV.

I love the game, but it bothers me like hell that there were bunch of areas that weren't utilized at all, outside of the escort quests. There was a pretty big area west of bandit encampment that has you only escort few people there.

Where does the claim of Asstomata's combat being good come from?

Besides 50% of the gameplay being on a 2D plane of some sort like the armor segments or the hacking minigame, shit's just got 4 weapon types with identical movesets.

Enemy encounters consist of mashing the two attack buttons while you evade the very obvious attacks in hopes that you do a different combo to trick you into thinking you're doing something new. You might as well put tape on Pod's fire buttons since you'll be firing at all times. The only real challenge comes from playing on Hard or Very Hard where a slight breeze can kill you
