>video games will never reach this level of detail in your lifetime

Why is the games industry so far behind compared to everyone else? What went wrong?
>>
>>378193238
who cares?

graphics don't matter
>>
I hate graphicsn****rs so much.
>>
Consoles.

Did you make this post before? If so, I remember you getting a good response explaining its too detailed and would be impractical. Fuck off.
>>
>>378193421

>graphics don't matter

End this fucking meme right now. Graphics are a vital part of gameplay, storytelling, character development, and more. They most certainly do fucking matter.
>>
>>378193238
Why do you show your autism by making the same thread daily?
>>
>>378193728
>storytelling
fuck off storyn****r
>>
>>378193238
Why is something that is completely prerendered graphically superior to something that has to be rendered in real time? Good question, OP. You sound like a smart guy.

To respond to your stupid statement, unless you are in your 60s video game graphics will probably reach that level in your life time. But prerendered cgi will look even better by that point so you can make a new thread then anyway (:
>>
>>378193238
Good. The last thing we need is more furshit characters.
>>
>>378193728
Play any atari 2600 game right now you dumb grafics nigger
>>
>>378193238
If you made a big budget game of nothing but pre-rendered cutscenes they'd look closer to that, although it'd be little more than a interactive DVD.
>>
>>378193238
Because rendering that in real time takes processing power that we just don't have yet. That single render you posted takes 8 hours, rendering Rocket in the entire movie takes several thousand hours. Trying to rotate the render would make most computers shit themselves.

Get back to me once graphic cards can do this render level in real time, 60 or greater fps AND not have the graphics card melt.
>>

>>
>video games will never reach this level of detail in your lifetime

says who exactly?
>>
>>378193728
That may be, but they aren't the most important thing. That would be functionality or gameplay.

That reminds me of the glory days of adventure games like Myst and Zork. Pre-rendered backgrounds, real life actors. Made the games look incredible, while also not taking barely any processing power at all. Too bad adventure genre is pretty much dead, with VR there could have been an incredible combination.
>>
>>378193984
They're unplayable now. What's your point?
>>
Daily reminder video games still haven't surpassed TOY STORY, a movie made 20 years ago.

This is why video games will never be considered art.
>>
>>378193728
They don't matter to the extent that SO SHINY takes precedence over the rest of the game's budget. To hell with super-realism, just get some good artists.

>>378193918

Did you just come here from reddit? You dumb nigger.
>>
>>378193238
If you want an honest answer? It's because consoles hold everything back. Though, I do a game that a game can very easily be low-poly and still be very enjoyable: like Katamari Damacy, or Bravely Default.

Unlikely. Consoles will still be the primary platform forever, and if the switch is any indication the future of consoles seems to be lower spec, higher cost.
>>
>>378193238
They will though
>>
>>378193238
just shove a bunch of prerendered FMVs in your game, not like anyone will notice
>>
>>378193238
Ratchet and Clank is already close to that, just a different art style. Infamous got alot right despite the art style. Uncharted 4 is up there with Crysis 3 as best looking games ever made.

We're at most two gens from that if devs so choose.

>inb4 sonyshill
The games aren't always great but damn if internal studios don't pull some impressive shit.
>>
>>378194536
>to the extent that SO SHINY takes precedence over the rest of the game's budget.
It doesn't though, you retard. Making a game look better costs nothing compared to:
>sticking the game's logo on buses
>sticking the main female on the side of a building in LA
>making a giant robot statue in a major shopping center
>getting a former beatle to write a song for the commercials
>getting a celebrity midget to read lines off the script in a bored monotone
>getting a frozen yogurt chain to name flavours after your characters
>sticking a character's face on top of mall paper towel dispensers
et cetera.
>>
>>378195319
>Uncharted 4 is up there with Crysis 3 as best looking games ever made.
The resolution is tiny and the framerate is low and even then it looks like a camera smeared in vaselline, what on earth are you smoking
>>
>>378193238
The industry is dieing because of the graphical arms race that occurred last gen take a look around 80 percent of triple a developers died last gen.
>>
>>378194105
Hello, I am a fellow gamer and it is my opinion that graphics are more important. Now, which one of our opinions holds more weight?
>>
are you honestly asking? Because the image you posted isn't being rendered in real time. Each frame probably takes about 5 minutes to fully render. So they get like 60 computers to render a single second every five minutes. Which is 5 hours for a single minute of CGI footage.
>>
>>378193238
>video games will never reach this level of detail in your lifetime
Yeah, because that's what the games are lacking lacking most.
Not great stories, good AI, engaging game play and content that's not copy pasted samey shit or 'collect 200/300/400/500 pieces of this shit from all over the map'.

I work with animals, real raccoons are fat, disgusting monsters incapable of love or affection for anything including their own young. They're vile little beasts that constantly cause problems.

Opossum are better. They're ugly but entirely harmless, can't spread rabies and keep the tick population down, and don't attack people.

It's not. Video game cinematics are made with the same degree film studios make theirs with. In game is different than a film, because rather than just being animations, there's code, other assets, object interactivity and many other factors that affect it.

If movies had that level of depth that video games do, then they would look a lot more like shit. Keep in mind most movies are still 24fps and games coming out now are majority 60fps.

So don't be a complete retard. A cinematic is not the same as in-game gameplay.

>In game is different than a film, because rather than just being animations, there's code, other assets, object interactivity and many other factors that affect it.

This is some serious bullshit trying to sound knowledgeable. Stop.

The main reason why games today don't deliver as much graphic detail is because to get to that level the processing power necessary to show those graphics in real time is ridiculously high and would take hours to render with the current processing power of basically all gaming equipment currently available in the market. Games are interactive and having the lowest lag between input and graphics reaction is key to deliver a proper experience meanwhile a movie producer can order a professional studio to take a grid of powerful pcs that in a few days will invest all their power to solely render a single scene which will then be compressed for distribution.
