It's because it doesn't really have replayability, so people just drop it once they're done. It does have a LOT of content though.

It's got a few free content updates coming in the future as well, and a playable Hornet after that.

Eh, it looks ok. Doesn't look as good as any modern platformers though, what with having a single damn palette for everything.

Hollow Knight is a god damned steal at $15, I was shocked that it launched at that price. If you're looking for a Metroidvania then HK will probably give you the best value you can get in terms of dollars to playtime.
