No, when you die in Diablo, you have to recover your corpse to get your gear back.

In Diablo 2 you could just quit and reload and your corpse would lie in front of your chest though.

Currency from your enemy would usually be gold. In some rpgs you can buy skill training.

Dark Souls predecessor Shadow Tower used items called soul pods to level up. They looked like chess pieces.
