The problem with MGQ is how wildly different Luka is portrayed. Some of the artists drew him as a tall 18 year old with adult features, while others drew him as a little kid. The consistency in general is really spotty.

The NPCs in the starting town will explain it better than I can.
Basically the world was twisted by a cataclysmic event 30 years prior and deviated from the original plot.
If you perform the right steps, you'll get a very interesting direct connection to the VN trilogy. Black Alice is alive and remembers everything up until she was killed.
