Actually, Steam refunds weren't a thing before EU regulations regarding refunds for digital consumer goods. Origin has had refunds for much, much longer than Steam so if it actually would've been like you said we would have had Steam refunds a hell of a lot sooner.

I have yet to download Uplay or Origin and hope I will never have to to play a game.

I did download the Epic games launcher in order to play Unreal Tournament, but I figure it will be available in Tencent's Wegame client in the future.

It's because a lot of nu-PC gamers don't like PC gaming, they want console gaming just with better graphics. They want Valve and Steam to be a competitor to Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Other companies having their own platform hurts the idea that Valve owns PC gaming. It wasn't enough to kill physical PC games and force everything on Steam, now Steam has to be the ONLY place to download PC games. Because again, they're console gamers and Steam is their console.

Know why console live on with physical and PC doesn't? These console all come with blu-ray drives built in! Everyone's got a blu-ray drive so they can have those high-capacity discs that modern graphics require. Few PC players are going to upgrade something as mundane as a disc drive. So it seems consoles have one advantage.
