Would you rather have a silent faceless protagonist to project upon or a distinct character with a personality?
>>
>>377987806

The only reason why there were silent protags in older games was due to lack of technical capability and/or devs being cheap as shit. There's literally no reason why a protag should be silent nowadays.
>>
>>377987806
I wish I had these facial aesthetics
>>
>>377988017
literally fucking wrong

i.e. Souls
>>
Why do I have to be limited to just one? These are just two different approaches to story telling.
>>
That jarhead had the personality of an1lb ground beef on a tray
>>
>>377987806
Depends on the genre. I don't need a personality in a generic shooter or pokemon, but silent protags in dialogue heavy games is just jarring.
>>
>>377988017
>>377987806
What if the main character is meant to be ambiguous or silent? Or what if his personality calls for him to be quiet e.g. master chief pre halo 4 or the man with no name

>>377987806
more diversity
>>
>>377987806
Or you can be both ie Doomguy
>>
>>377987806
I like if a character has more of a reputation than a personality. Call me a faggot, but one quote from Halo 2 always stuck with me.
>When they said they were sending reinforcements, I didn't think they'd send a spartan.

Just that sentence alone painted more of a picture than any voiced protagonist could.
>>
>>377987806
i wish to be the little girl
>>
smackdown vs raw caw in every game. custom movesets, out of fight and in fight costumes, entrance music, what could go wrong?
>>
>>377987806
Depends if the game has hot beastmen or not.
>>
I want a game with a create a character system that lets you build a character's personality via dialogue options
like the more you pick asshole options, the more the character will act like an asshole instinctively in general conversation and cutscenes.

And not that binary shit either, I'd be satisfied with just a spectrum thing, y'know, like-

>not an asshole
>kind of an asshole
>really an asshole
>cunt

also, we really need more options to make main characters act like pussies. I mean, you are basically doing what everyone says and picking the least polarizing responses in games like persona, you should at least have that reflect in the character's personality
>>
>>377987806
Option 1 for rpgs.

Option 2 for everything else.
>>
>>377987806
it doesn't matter to me as long as the character is likable
>>
>>377987806
Depends on the game, i honestly think a personality as edgy and litterally fucking retarded like the e.y.e. guy is great but then you have talking exposition line delivery man who only talks obvious shit , i feel kinda separated from the game, like mirror edge talking for example, i get why its important to speak for the story, i just don't like that character, bioshit infinite guy too, i just fucking can't take him, wolfenstein pseudo emotional shit, its mind numbing , now every here and then you get good ones like duke nukem (who is funny) sargent cortez (hilarious too) Master chief, small words and only when its time for them, Geralt from the witcher is also pretty damn great, Leon from resident evil.

I think when the dialogue is natural but well written it has the power to pull you closer to that character but when you have only drama and exposition man/woman guy delivering cliche lines from every movie ever its forgettable.

Yeah, right? I mean, no one on /v/ makes a shitload of threads about race politics and complaining about discrimination in gaming.

Depends on the game. Well, except for
>to project upon
Is this actually a thing that people do and not just a meme? I find it impossible to do, I can't comprehend self-inserting into animu or other shit either. I mean, in a CRPG type thing where you are literally making your own character then sure I can understand it, though in D&D stuff it's genuinely more fun to play as some character who is completely different from you. But projecting onto something you didn't even have a hand in creating? Don't get it.

All that said I don't care about silent/faceless in a game where it's really just about the gameplay and blasting the shit out of enemies. I don't see myself there but I don't need to have the protag have some powerful story if the game doesn't call for it. Conversely if I'm following along a crafted story that can be awesome too if it's good enough. Both ultimately depend on the skill of the dev.

Worth noting though: faceless is harder to fuck up if a dev is bad. A game can be super fun even if the dev has bad writing skills but just decides not to use them at all. But a game that depends on character and has bad writing is wrecked. So I'd rather a dev go faceless then be a shitty hamwriter.

>>377991067
can you go away already ubisoft
>>
>>377987806
The latter.

Loved B.J being a down on his luck soldier dealing with the biggest nightmare he could imagine becoming reality. I preferred Dead Space 2 Isaac to DS1 and it honestly made even the first game's events have more impact because I could tell how badly they fucked him up.

Silent protagonists have to be done right. Either you go the HL2 route where everything's implied and they are 100% a vector for the player, or they have personality shine through in spite of that. Fucking Doom 2016 Doomguy's one of the best characters in recent games and he never says a word.
>>
>>377988930
>It is an absolutely amazing game
>when it comes to identity politics

In what fucking universe is "the NPCs are brown enough" a legitimate factor in something meant to entertain you?
>Well the gameplay was superb, innovating, and original, and the story was well written with believable characters, but I'm afraid the identity politics just weren't there. Final score: 7/10 -kotaku
>>
>>377987806
Literally depends on the game.

>>377991067
Ubisoft games are bad and unoriginal and they're about to be eaten by a massive french telecommunications company and probably downsized massively.
Can't wait, though it'd be better if it happened to EA, still mad about spore.
>>
>>377987806
Depends on the genre and story.
>>
>>377992875
>Fucking Doom 2016 Doomguy's one of the best characters in recent games and he never says a word.
Says a lot about how much of a joke storytelling in videogames is.

why not both?
>>
Depends on the game.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a character driven RPG that would be better with a silent protagonist rather than distinct one.
>>
I like Master Chief. He's an established character, but mostly silent.
>>
>>377994162
They did it right by having him have a personality despite that and having the rest of the cast play it up.

Demons are scared shitless of him probably moreso than God (if he exists in the setting) because he's THERE. The overseer demon basically tries at first to get him out of the way before giving up and just hoping killing him actually works this time. Their fucking gospel speak of him as their Anti-Christ and his actions very much color how Samuel Hayden deals with him throughout the game. Just the fact that he has to bitterly accept every setback Doomguy makes worse because he knows he can't realistically do anything to him is great.

It's fucking sad they beat a lot of writers at their own game while adhering to John Carmack's idea that a good plot in videogames is as important as it is in porn: not really, a bonus if it's there.
>>
>>377994365
But that's it.
Demons are scared of him, he's very violent.
That's all there is to him.
That's basically what Rockstar did with Trevor, make a character that's a stand in for the player, and Trevor was a fucking joke.
And they beat a lot of writers because the only people who write for videogames are glorified Sonic and MLP fanfiction writers.
People praising Doom proves that.
>>
>>377987806
>to project upon
dude I just want to play a fucking game
>>
>>377994551
/thread
It's not like they are going to tell a story worth experiencing.
>>
>>377994491
It's all in selling it and not wasting the player's time.

Though immediately some of that is definitely in very quick but still nonetheless unskippable cutscenes.

They took the moment in HL2 where you're supposed to say Freeman gave people hope and made it so you don't even have to. You know how Doomguy feels and thinks from action alone. He's not some super deep character but the point's gotten just fine.
>>
>>377987806
I don't project on them protagonists so I don't know what to tell you.

you faggot.
>>
Depends on the game genre.

I like my protags silent in RPGs and lively in adventure.
>>
>going out of your way to tell a story in a video game
>centering it around some souless self-insert character with no discernible traits or personality

no thanks
>>
>>377989069
That was good. The e3 line delivery even better.
>>
>>377987806
Depends

A character like Master Chief is great for the near silent type or the Rookie for full silent.

Sgt. Cortez in TS:FP was a great goofy but ass kicking hero. We need more of those once in awhile.
>>
>>377987806
I never really self-insert as the protagonist so I prefer a distinct character. If the game has a character creator, I never make myself. I make a distinct character of some sort.
