What other stragegy game of this type would you recommend then? Age of Empire and Civilization look pretty good but then again CK2 did to me too.

Turn off Sunset invasion.

CK2 is fairly forgiving so don't be afraid if you lose at first
just because you utterly lose a war doesn't mean that the game is over

Also playing as a vassal is more fun because you actually experience court intrigue.

Start in 1066 Ireland as the Ua Brain's, they're on the south part of the island. I know the difficulty bar looks like its a moderate difficulty start but ignore that, it's the best start for new players just focus on becoming the king of Ireland and you should pick up most of the mechanics on the way.
