I actually liked the setting, characters and most of the plot of Peace Walker. It was super comfy. Gameplay was unfortunately a dogshit grind however.

MGS1 has the story and the bossfights going for it, that's it.

As overall experiences the first three Metal Gear Solid games are so incredibly solid, I'd rank them about even, but perhaps give the edge to MGS3 if I had to.

Then come 4 and 5, which are still both good but really lacking in different ways.

Peacewalker is pretty okay for what it is, I guess. I enjoyed it but it's just not as good as the other games.

Portable Ops would be okay but being stuck on the PSP dooms it.

Controls and some of the ideas were great for gameplay. But overall the lack of proper level design, challenge, boss fights (except bullet sponges twice), variation in missions (every mission is extract something), reusing missions and locations all the time, boring empty and frankly pointless open world where traversing it is a huge chore (especially if you don't take the horse as buddy)... It wasn't that great.

Only saving grace would be experimentation, but you try everything once. Then you find two things that work you're just gonna use that for the rest of the game. It doesn't help that it takes real time hours sometimes to craft stuff, that it takes resources to drop stuff or restock on ammo (or you need to wait 15 minutes for helicopter), that your inventory is very limited (so less experimentation unless you want to go through all the shit and waste resources)...

It just has so many design flaws that drag the game down so much. Along with shit / non existant story and the game being unfinished.

Has a Solidus mod been made yet for the game? If not, faggots better get on it. Should be easy too. All you have to do is replace his head with Ground Zeroes Big Boss, make his hair short if possible and place the eye patch on the other eye. Not exactly sure if that last one can be done without any fuck ups happening. Remove bionic arm and force the battle dress to be worn and color it black.

It's not that hard to sprinkle a few civilians around or do what MGS4 did and have enemy factions (Russians vs Mujaheddin) fighting around the map. Instead we get gigantic maps populated only by animals, one faction of combatants who never fight anyone other than you and some prisoners.

PW is extremely menu heavy and there's actually a shitload of prompts when starting the game and between missions

Also the gameplay is a downgrade from MGS1 except with action shooting controls and a lot of overpowered toys. It only feels like a stealth game if you play it naked with a partner.

Very well. Big Boss is a terrible replacement for Solid Snake, a rookie who was dumb as fuck in an attempt to humanize the myth but just made it look stupid as fuck. The Cobras are a weak replacement for FOX HOUND with none of the charisma or presence and aside from The End, real shitty to fight. The Boss was great but entries since then have completely ruined her character as she's now the origin of everything and perfect and holy shit she's so good. The soundtrack save for a few songs is completely forgettable, escorting EVA was beyond shitty, the healing menu was retarded and time consuming, and The Shagohod is by far the worst piloted robot ever.

Still pretty good. But not MGS1 good.

But yeah as a game, MGS3 is probably the best. It has some serious flaws but you can self impose limits. I play with the cigar to keep my health dead except on bosses. I don't use tranqs or silencers. I don't leave areas under alert and don't change camo in the middle of a map. Prone is still OP but what can you do.

There's less directed material which is a genuine complaint but it's incredibly well made mechanically. I'll say it doesn't feel that much like a metal gear game and hey, Kojima wanted to be done with the series at 2.
