Handhelds have better sales than consoles, because everyone is required to buy a handheld+game for multiplayer. Only one person is required to buy a console+game for local multiplayer.

There is none aside from Nintendo looking for a new gimmick. A handheld/console hybrid machine for Nintendo first party games is a fine idea. The whole "play with all of your friends at a picnic!" is just them trying to recapture the normie appeal that the Wii had, however.

it's pretty easy to setup, sure it's an extreme and staged example but even multiplayer off of one console works out well enough.

i played 2-player Mario Kart with my 2 1/2 year old toddler so he wouldn't fidget in his seat after getting bored of the provided crayons while we waited for our food at a Perkins. (the new driving assist is really useful to allow him to finish races)

yes, he will steer the kart around but isn't quite able to do everything himself in the game so i left it all on. my son will reguarly yell out "i'm driving! i'm driving!" and was generally very excited to play games with daddy.
