It doesn't matter who is in charge of the lore. The problem is that WoW is an MMO and there are certain things about it that will not change. The factions will never see any real changes. For example, races won't leave the Alliance/Horde no matter how badly they fuck up or betray either party, because that would have in-game consequences that disrupt the player's experience. It puts a very hard limit on what you can do with the lore. Things like the Blood Elves being in talks with Varian to rejoin the Alliance weren't really interesting and didn't really matter because it would never fucking happen, and the bullshit they pulled with Garona to disrupt that meeting just ends up feeling like an asspull because we know they HAD to reach that conclusion.

The lore is stuck being shit because the restrictions of the MMO mean nothing interesting can happen.

Something I've always wondered is why Blizzard haven't tried a single-player WoW RPG. I know Lord of the Clans fell through, but I'd want to see it happen, if only so we could see Azeroth in an updated engine and at it's full size, rather than the condensed version in WoW.

Most of the badass/likable characters are dead.

Garrosh died because he got too greedy and couldn't solve problems with anything but military aggression.

Vol'jin dies after Thrall makes him Warchief because Blizz needed Sylvanas in the spotlight for this expansion.

Tirion and Varian die because we need to establish just how powerful the Burning Legion is, also Varian dies because its time for Anduin to become MANduin.

Gul'dan and Illidan come back because Blizz thought we needed more characters who had their spot in the limelight already to come back and be relevant again. Gul'dan dies (and Illidan crushes his skull again, lol) because Blizz needed to remind us how bad the Burning Legion is.
