On the subject of playing games alone I'm still convinced the most horrifying thing in gaming would be to play everquest on a server with no other humans.

The graphics and world are so uncanny and when you realize community is what made it it feels like... a husk. Dead mmo's are creepy.

The reason they're located above the max height, and not inside the actual building space, is to save loading times in the game. This way, the interior is only loaded once entered, not when you're near it.

>>377903189
There was a whole community exploring it when it was found, everything spawned in zones, which were hard to identify or find, it was fucking nuts. You could get tattoos in there that I think had been taken out of the regular game.

Yeah it was off the top of the map so movement didn't work, but you could randomly walk at some points, it was awesomely weird.

I always found unsettling how in some games things are always happening as you continue with the plot, but as you later return to parts of the map that were full of people before it is always eerily quiet, like people just disappeared.

Bonus points if there are props from missions that remain for the rest of the game.
>>
So everyone's saying the whole "Out of bounds" thing with the infinite emptiness, but as a kid it wasn't really the infinite emptiness itself that scared me, it was the fact that this little island was the only thing in this entire world and nothing else exists. The thought made me shudder.

I've always been really freaked out by the sea, and playing Jaws Unleashed really spooked me as a kid (despite the fact that you play as Jaws). I remember just staring off in the distance at whale sharks and such swimming around, and swimming down into a deep, dark trench and finding a whale skeleton and being simueltaneously mystified and spooked. I've always found the ocean terrifying and entrancing, if I ever fell of a boat out at sea I'd instantly shit myself and start screaming but I'd love to be able to explore the sea if I could float around in spectator mode.

nothing creepier than exploring Worlds.com, a dead Second-Life predecessor. Everything there was player-made, so it's like walking around an abandoned, dated husk of long dead creativity. There's also a few weirdos that still play religiously and some "people" who just haunt the game and do extremely creepy shit. There's also some hidden stuff that's extremely freaky that you will never find unless a regular brings you there.

I played Battlefield 3 singleplayer campaign and had a lot of fun going out of bounds of the levels, you could get out surprisingly far before the ground stopped colliding with your body and you fell through the map.

All I could think about was how fun it would be to utilize this wasted space in a huge multiplayer map with 64+ people, not only were the levels huge but their edges were pretty distant, large flanking manuevers and transport use would be needed, and if Battlefield 3 had map tools thats what would no doubt happen, sadly there were no map tools so that idea remains just an idea.

I still need to play Battlefield 4 singleplayer someday to check out the out of bounds areas in those levels but the MP is just much more fun.

Joel Gold, a psychiatrist at the Bellevue Hospital Center, revealed that by 2008, he had met five patients with schizophrenia (and heard of another twelve) who believed their lives were reality television shows. Gold named the syndrome "The Truman Show delusion" after the film and attributed the delusion to a world that had become hungry for publicity.

Gold stated that some patients were rendered happy by their disease, while "others were tormented". One traveled to New York to check whether the World Trade Center had actually fallen—believing the 9/11 attacks to be an elaborate plot twist in his personal storyline. Another came to climb the Statue of Liberty, believing that he would be reunited with his high-school girlfriend at the top and finally be released from the show.[46]

Yeah I think I can tolerate like 30 minutes to an hour being inside the caves or mining deep underground in the game when I last played it, but only with lots of torches lighting everything up, and clear paths to the surface, it just gets more and more unsettling being down there too long especially when playing alone with the spooky ambient music and creepers, skellies and spiders from hollow caverns you can hear and are afraid of stumbling into when mining.

The other game I recelty played with them is Skyrim, and I can tolerate being there even less. I remember Fallout 3 metro area being really hard to get through, probably no place in vidya I hate more, those fucking rad and feral ghouls charging at you, fuck that.

Is that how the vigilante mission glitch worked?
I remember you had to park in front of a door so that you would enter just as you got out of the vehicle, then wait a few seconds inside an the level would clear on is own. I'd imagine they made it so the targets would be at the same height as you and the glitch pulled them up with you and then they fell to their death

No!

Also I just remembered the underground areas in Mass Effect, those were unsettling as well, especially with some of the music that plays in those areas, ambient and eerie, it didnt help that whether you were on the Moon or some distant alien world the underground areas all looked the same, transparent walls showing the same orange-red soil around you.

I never really realized how much I find underground areas in vidya unsettling before, interesting.

Meanwhile some of the best moments are when you break out of bounds of a game world, I remember trying to overcome the invisible walls in Fallout 3 before I succeeded once jumping around the rubble, and went off exploring a flat plain outside the map with a few hills until I reached the edge of a massive cliff at some point and jumped down and died, fun stuff.

Unfortunately, like all Bethesda games, you can get yourself so OP that nothing even matters anymore and the enemy variety is low enough that you can acclimatise to them all quite quickly. But the soundtrack is still pretty fucking great.

On my mage I was obsessed with blinking through instance portals and otherwise attempting to bypass invisible walls. Today it's shitty, I try to get into the dragon isles/ northern plaguelands part but they blocked it off well; at most I can get into stratholme and see that small untextured naxxramas

my all time favorite was the "screen" in karazhan you have to jump on books to reach, and whne you fall you're on a tileset of a troll village with nothing there it's so fucknig strange.

Star Trek Brdige Commander has a level that you can use in free battles which has you fight near a black hole. I thought it would just be the one from DS9 with it's pretty colours in the background but it's actually an invisible black hole that pulls you in faster than your ship can ever fly without warp. It starts pulling you towards it the moment you enter the map.

This spooked the hell out of me. Space is a creepy place.

Those Max Payne ambient TV/Radio broadcasts you could listen to.

I remember there's one long one during a moment with a false sense of urgency while chasing a bad guy you've been after for awhile, in one of the rooms he runs through, there's a fucking weird TV show on, and you can listen to it.

not to mention those blood trail dream sequences with the god damn baby crying in the background the entire time, and that scream Max let's out when he falls to his death.. But, oh god, the baby crying.. Endlessly.. As you continue to fail what is some of the hardest platforming to do with a controller, 'cause it's a port from PC.

All of that is pointless in the single player game, but I did like having darts and golf in GTAV multiplayer (gave me and my friend something else to do when running around getting run over by traffic got boring) and I wished they had bowling in GTAV because of that.

I don't know man, if they managed shit like the flying colossi, I think they could also manage these, but time and money restrains are bitches. The unused colossi where at least cut in a very early stage, so their models and textures weren't that detailed. I really feel bad for people who made the unused areas, like the dam or those ruins next to it, these look almost finished. Hell, they even are in the game world, just inaccessible.

Sotc in general is a great source of feelings this thread is looking for, maybe not so much now when it has been datamined to hell and back, but I'm still surprised that nobody has posted it earlier.

Or the level with the one big cave with the velociraptors and the two extensions where at one point you had to descend to this pond to get a torch and you get ambushed by crabs

But I think the levels that spooked me in this game far more than anything. Were the motherfucking alligator levels. Holy shit those made me anxious to no end

Neverending fall death drops in PS1 era platformers always messed with me as a kid, especially when combined with a skybox that made it seem solid land was very far away.
Games like Croc, PS1 Spiderman games, and I remember a level in the PS1 Alladin game that had that.
In the case of Croc it always felt like something happened to the world, messing it up and leaving it mostly empty.

System Shock 2 scared the crap out of me when I was little. I was wondering why no one else thought it was scary, but it turned out really few had hear about it.

There's just something about being completely and utterly alone. ...and then thinking you see something, or hearing something.
