Not really. All that ever really came from the original trailers ranged from complete cinematic bullshots to clearly over designed set pieces that would likely never be in the game. I lost interest in the original product because they never showed anything that actually felt real.

When the game actually released, I bought it used and went in without any expectations. The story was a mess and the combat was boring, but I still had a great time. The travel/roadtrip aesthetic was fantastic, the characters were generally endearing/fun, the combat (while dull) was flashy and allowed for weapon variety, and the music was good. By the end I genuinely liked the characters and really found the small moments (cooking, camping, car conversations, photography) to be awesome.

Nothing we ever got before looked real. So I kept on waiting to see what would come out, and was pleasantly surprised. The game was a mess of ideas, but still gave me plenty of enjoyment. If anything, the nice moment of playing Spira Unplugged in the car while it rains, traveling to my next destination, watching as new scenery passes by, and the guys dicking around, talking and goofing off, was really something special.

There's a point at which the game becomes very linear narrative wise. They've updated the infamous thirteenth chapter to make it not absolute dogshit but even still its quite bad.

I literally just plat'd it today and I'm not gonna lie: I really enjoyed it. The combat was adequate, lots of side-quests and plenty of post game content in the form of extra dungeons and optional super bosses. All the banter from the boys really makes the game, and the vistas are incredible.

I get why people are disappointed, but the game is fine.

If Versus XIII DID come out, and if it DID look just as cool as it did in those few trailers, and DID deliver on all the interesting lore and shit, then yeah, it would've been way better than XV. But the fact is that those trailers were some flashy CG cutscenes and a handful of setpiece areas that looked cool but almost certainly didn't have any through line connecting them.

People have a tendency to just fill in the blanks in their heads and assume that the whole thing would have been amazing. I don't understand. Insomnia and Leide are shown, in-game, to not even be that far away. I'm supposed to believe the King's car breaks down literally 20 minutes away from Insomnia? I'm also supposed to believe Luna crossed that entire bridge peacefully, in fucking heels, without even the slightest attempt by the empire to capture her? Also she's not even wearing the same outfit from Kingsglaive when she escapes from Insomnia.

The last 20 minutes of Kingsglaive and the Omen trailer are the best things to come out of the XV project.
